Does getting a 2019 Topps Card #100 Mike Trout Leaping Catch at Wall in gold help out my 2019 Topps collection.  Meaning am I all good on card #100 now, check it off the list......or have I now got a card for a totally different set and am now chasing something down the rabbit hole even further.  Should have left some bread crumbs....

The wonderful thing about this hobby is that it's YOUR collection so you get to do what you want. If you want that card to be your #100 in the set then you are complete. With that said technically the Gold card is part of a parallel set so the checklist on here would have you 1 card short of complete. But again, that's up to you. You have a #100 on your hands and if that is good enough for you so be it.

He's right its your collection if you feel its complete your done.  What I would do is put it with 99 and 101 next to it and see if it bothers you. Thats I I found out I didnt like it and kept going to get the regular one.  

As others have said it’s your collection you do it how it makes you happy. I will offer that if you wanted you could probably trade it for the base card and some other cards to start finishing another set. We have an active and awesome trading community on here check it out!

The only "detraction" that can be made about you having the gold card in the "set" in place of a base card is this - if you ever want to sell the collection of cards as a "complete set", you won't be able to because other collectors will not recognize it as a set.

However, one of the things many collectors are doing these days is the creation of "franken-sets" - basically a mishmosh of whatever they want that makes it "a set" in their eyes - and that, honestly, is a VERY cool thing that's happening in the hobby. So, you would be able to market it as a franken-set - if you wanted to sell it. But if that's your binder or box of cards that you plan to keep forever, enjoy it the way it is - if you enjoy it that way.

I had this exact "problem." For years, I just collected, didn't read websites, magazines, whatever. I bought the packs and sorted the cards into teams, then filled out the sets by going to my local card shop. I had no idea about inserts or any of that, er, stuff. In 1993, I was still buying packs (now I just buy the new sets and build vintage, but I digress). There were some cards that were gold. They looked cool. Whenever I got one, I kept it, and got rid of the normal one. Fast forward to about 2015. I've discovered this site. I finally learn that I have about 120 parallels from 1993. It bugs me, slightly. So one of the first trades I ever made on here was spinning gold into regular. I traded almost all of the gold to get the regular cards. But I don't think I quite succeeded. First, there are at least two that are different cards, but have the same numbers as the base set. So I kept the gold ones, because they are different. Second, I think there were about three cards that I didn't succeed in trading away. I could go look, and someday I will, but I'm pretty sure there are three gold cards mixed in with base set. Guess what? I don't care. I have the complete set, plus two others. Not the least bit concerned.

Thank you all for taking the time to reply to my question. I started collecting baseball cards in 1980, it seemed so much simpler back then.  with the exception of buying a complete set for myself every birthday, Ive been out of the scene since 1992. I don't remember all the parallels, inserts, variations, etc.  I've always focused on Topps with some Fleer and Donruss thrown in.  I think I have every Topps complete base set going back to 1972! About to start working on 1971. I have two boys 9 and 12, who I got into collecting last year, what a blast! I get a kick out of hearing them quote stats which they obviously got off the back of their cards! These companies have really worked the whole marketing/expansion aspect of collecting, especially for someone with a little ocd like me. We pretty much buy blasters and mega boxes and they throw so many insert cards into the packs, there must be 15,000 cards in 2020 Topps. I get totally confused!  I think I just need to chill and have more fun with it, not act like its something I need to conquer, but these awesome checklists y'all put together make that really hard to do!  Thanks again!
