Just bought my first few packs today and have a few thoughts.
First, I am really glad that they went back to complete (as far as I can tell) stats on the back. The trend towards less statistical info was the biggest flaw in recent sets, in my mind.
Second, does this set seem a little star heavy compared to what must appear in Series 2? In Series 1 we have both MVPs, both CYAs, both RoYs, as well as other stars like Kershaw, Scherzer, Kluber, Altuve, Trout, Cabrera, Votto, and Posey. Who's left for Series 2? Stanton, Harper, Pujols, Ichiro(?), Beltre(?), and ?
Overall I like the set. It reminds me of the 1982 set, which was towards the end of my first phase of collecting. I didn't pull anything too rare today -- the "best" was a Corey Seager relic, which isn't too bad now that I think of it.
Finally, I am a huge Joey Votto fan (grew up following the Big Red machine in the 70s). My son for some reason is a huge Buster Posey fan. Today in a retail pack (14 cards) I had Votto as the first card and Posey as the last. It was a pack fated for the Blackston family!
Any other thoughts on this set?
Edited for spelling...

You didn't mention Judge. There's your Series 2 hype.

I'm going to reevaluate how I collect after the new year. It's just getting way too expensive for the new stuff. Sometimes I just want to buy a pack, not a whole box or even blaster.

So it appears that all of the following are in Series 1:
Betts, Yelich, deGrom, Snell, Acuna, Ohtani, Trout, Kershaw, Greinke, Goldschmidt, Price, JD Martinez, Bryant, Kluber, Ramirez, Lindor, Blackmon, Arenado, Correa, Altuve, Verlander, Judge, Torres, Scherzer, Votto, Posey, Soto
This leaves Rizzo, Stanton, Ichiro(?), Pujols, Harper, Bumgarner, and Beltre(?) for Series 2. This seems like a real disparity between the series.
Am I missing something?

Too big, 300 base, 43 insert sets, 15 paraell sets, and 12 promo sets too big for any set builder like myself.

I thought last year was overkill and this one really making me think of changing what I want to collect. I don't do parallels already and now thinking about dropping Inserts to focus on just Auto or MEM. a few insert sets were ok, but lately turned mundane with set for everything. I kept expecting an insert of "Parking Lot Attendance" and you know it's coming after Stadium Foods has been done with Latrines to follow

With all the big names in series 1 I start to wonder if the top names wil be doubled up and get another card in series 2?

Got a blaster of this last night at Target.
I actually really like the set. I think some of the photography is really good and the backs look much better than recent releases.
Since I live in AZ, it would have been nice to have gotten some of the Cactus League inserts, but the blasters only have the Grapefruit League. Either way, I really like the design of the Grapefruit League cards.
I got the Greinke base card and some other Dbacks so that was nice, and luckily for my heart I didn't end up pulling a Goldschmidt.
