This set was put into the new box set category, but to me it seems it should be considered a major release, along the same lines as other Traded and Update sets. Thoughts?

I voiced my opinion on this prior, but didn't hear anything one way or the other...
I say....
Major Realease would contain at least two of these
- over 100 cards
- Pack release
- Major company (bigger distribution?)
Box Set
- No pack release
- less than 100 cards
- major company
Odd ball (or other category)
- Not by major company
- pack or collated release
- Smaller company (limited distribution)
my thoughts on the debate :)

My recollection is that it was only available as a complete set in its little cardboard box, hence box set.

Only available as a box set, thus it goes in the Box Set category.

Someday my cards may double in value and then be worth half of what I paid for them.

It was my understanding from some previous posts that if the box set was an extension of the major release base set it would still be considered a major release. For example, also in 1991 Fleer Update and Score Rookie/Traded are still major releases. Topps Traded is too, but it was also pack-released. In prior years when Topps Traded was box only it's still listed as major release.
Also, here are the descriptions in the FAQ:
Box Set
Usually smaller, non-pack-based releases by major card manufactures commemorating a specific team, event, theme, or player.
Major Release
National, pack-based or factory set release by a major card manufacturer.
Traded/update/final edition sets to me seem to fall more into the major release category as extensions of the base set.

I tend to agree with the supporting evidence. Certainly the FAQ leans in Major Release direction .

Seems like this is one we need Admin to weigh in and give final orders. I see this thread being batted back and forth for several pages ultimately meaning nothing until / unless Admin makes the decision.

This one was an extension of the main set and should be treated the same as any "Traded" or "Update" set. It isn't a one-off like "Rookies" or "All-Stars" or something similar

Not an extension of the main set, numbering starts with "1F". An extension/continuation would start with "801".

True, though the same can be said for any of the traded/update sets (except '81 Topps). My original question was whether this set fits into the same category as those, because I thought it had been clearly determined that those type of sets were still major releases, even though they were relased only in box form. It appears it is not clear-cut at this point, so I would agree with Brimrose that some additional guidance is needed.
