1988 Score Baseball Forum

What cards would you trash, if any?  

I order a lot of cards online.  Often, sellers include various extras as fillers that I find myself tearing up and throwing away--stars and all.  Recently, I've torn up some 1989 Upper Deck and 1980's/90's Score/DonrussFleer.  I just can't stand to look at those cards in my collection, so I end up ripping them up after a moment of consideration  

A few years ago, I actually torn up and threw away an entire complete Factory Set of 1988 Score, including the magic motion card insert set.  As the inaugural Score set, I think that pretty much sums up the value of that brand in my opinion.  The "crayon box" design is so completely worthless that the company should have named themselves No Hit or Slump.

I also threw away complete hand-collated sets of 1990 and 1991 Donruss a few years ago.  To me, the incomplete statistics on the back just make them completely worthless.  The flourescent backs on their '80s cards remind me of something from 20 years earlier, but in a non-vintage way..  

Fleer are the most depressing looking baseball cards I've ever seen.  Seriously, they don't even look like baseball to me.  I've thrown out boxes of early '80s Fleer/Donruss containing hall of famers.  Actually, I think I actually burned a few 800 ct boxes of this stuff in a backyard bonfire a couple years ago.

Upper Deck managed to fool a generation of collectors by using the same card design for just about every set release.  Collectors found themselve paying for a diamond hologram.  I continue to tear up each and every one of those cards that come into my possession.  

If actions speak louder than words, then I have certainly spoken; but if you're willing to trash it, then you should be able to speak it.  If anything, I've helped to increase the value of those sets by reducing supply.  I would actually appreciate someone willing to tear up complete sets of my 1987-1991 Topps cards, since I don't have the heart to do it.  

The only cards I've thrown away are mid-90s glossy cards that were stuck together and couldn't be separated without destroying them.

I've started a box where I put damaged and otherwise worthless cards. My intent is to either use them for some art projects or to sell them as a cheap bulk lot for other people that might want to do art projects or just have kids that don't care about the condition of the cards.
One thing I'd like to do is cut up cards and then glue them to wood, gloss it, and then turn them into clocks featuring either individual players or single teams.

The only ones I ever destroy are those that are already damaged and duplicates of cards from the 70's and 80's that were severely miscut.  If it is the only one in my collection, then I keep it until I find a better version to replace it and then rip it.  On that point, I began adding about 800 duplicates from Topps 1977 football, and noticed that many many many cards were crooked, some so much that the opposite top and bottom corners were cut completely off of the card.  I know this happened quite a bit in this era where the card was cut so that it was not centered but the first time I really noticed that the printing was not straight on the card.  Anyone know if this was ever a major problem for other issues.

Ought oh, I sense a disturbance in the Force....With that being said, thought about it, and even mentioned burning a bunch here. That didn't go over too well.

Back when I used to drink, a friend of my son's suggested we burn a Gretzky from some packs of UD Hockey I was opening, it was a hologram. Told him he was insane. After a few more beers, I decided to do it, but with one I had 5 or 6 of, think it was Owen Nolan, and had some dings. That did give off some very trippy colors for a few seconds.

I only throw them away if they are beat to hell and I have one in better condition.  I will use duplicates for bookmarks, etc however.

I agree that Donruss and Fleer look like crap; therefore I allowed myself to acquire very few of them. 

whenever a buy a bunch of cards at a yard sale or auction my first job is skimming through and pulling out any of the cards from the 80s and 90s that are not NRMT or better and throw them out.  then when i go to add them to database if i already have 1 or two on my trade list i will put the extras aside and usually will drop off at the next local card show front desk where they typically have free cards for kids.  i trade alot on here so i dont want anything less than NRMT to trade just to keep my trading partners happy.  if they are older vintage i will hang on to cards in lesser condition to trade but will list the condition in the database so people know what to expect.

To continue along this line of discussion, there was a guy burning complete sets of 1987 Topps cards on youtube a few years ago that I really appreciated.  I love the 1987 topps set, but unless more of them get thrown out (like millions of them), they'll never gain any value.  Although I stopped collecting for value after the '80s/'90s boom and bust, it does hurt to see my favorite era of collecting ('87-'91) receive little to no respect.  I own over 20 complete sets of 1987 Topps myself, but don't have the heart of destroy any of them (unless they're miscut).  Of course, I destroy everything I get from the other brands for a completely different reason--which is because I just don't want to deal with them. 

I don't love all cards; just Topps cards; Let the rest burn. 

By the way, it's been like over 100 degrees around here lately. 

Now days I prefer they get RECYCLED not thrown away. 

For me the cards on the EXTERMINATE list would be 1990s minor league cards from guys who never made my fave teams, are not PC guys from other teams, don't fit into my niche PCs of similar names to me, or of other famous people.
