I understand the (and like) the Box Set category and realize its a relatively new category. I have been requesting that some of the obvious sets that were catagorized as Major Releases be moved to Bos Sets and it has been done which I appreciate.
I understand this may be a little murky and in the big picture not the end of the world, but I think we (me in some cases) have been requesting some of the sets be moved to the Box Set category when it really should be considered a Major Release, However, it was requested just because it was issued in a box-type set. A good example of this are the Topps Traded / Update sets. Though many of these early Traded or Update sets were in fact released in a box (factory set) , I believe they are still considered a Major Release for Topps as they are essesntially a continuation (update) of their flagship set. Further it still meets the definition of a Major Release as listed in the FAQ section:
"National, pack-based or factory set release by a major card manufacturer."
Your thoughts? What about other sets that have been moved? Kind of thinking on the same idea for the other manufactures "Update" (or whatever thy call them) sets

~ Patrick Please Please Please read my profile before making a trade proposal. My "wants" for my Cardinals collection is accurate from 1900 - 2008. I still have about 12,000Plus Cardinals cards from 2009-present to sort through and enter. Please do not offer any Cardinals cards from 2008-present unless you contact me first as there is a chance I already have it amongst the multitude to still go through. I still have about 30K Cardinals duplicates that are not yet entered in the database as FS/FT. "For the love of the game"

I consider the Traded and Update sets "Major" (any main set I have, I also have its extension), but All-Star, Highlights, The Rookies, etc. are just "Box" and "nice-to-haves"

What is the TCDb's definition of a Major Release?
What is the TCDb's definition of a Box Set?
Please add a clear definition for each.

(My personal opinion and not necessarily the views on here)
I considered a Box set as anything 100 cards and under released as a complete set and not available in packs.
Traded/Updates would go in Major releases as they are from the major companies and over 100 cards. Tiffany sets would be the same here as they were only sold as a set and not individual packs/cards.
Game or other releases (Classic) would go into Oddball.

It's called HIERARCHY. When releases can fit in multiple categories there's a heirarchy in deciding where it's placed.
Just because a traded/update set is a continuation of a Major Release doesn't make it a Major Release. The traded box sets were not as widely available like the packs were.
College, minor league, draft are also "major releases" but they have their own category. Members asked for a Box Set category and now...

Someday my cards may double in value and then be worth half of what I paid for them.

Right Chuck, exactly, and now....... TCBd has to give us a clear definition of both and where to list them. If there is massive ambiquity, then maybe BOX SET wasn't a good idea. So as gator said, we have a BOX SET option, MAJOR RELEASE option and even an ODDBALL option.
Soooooo
Where would you list the 1988 Topps Traded Set?
or
the 1988 Donruss Rookies Set?
or
any Classic Travel set?
If I read it correctly, each one of the above could be listed in any different option. And this is where inconsistency on site comes in and new and even old members get confused. CLARITY, Is what's needed.

My opinion, 1988 Topps Traded would be Major and 1988 Donruss Rookies would be Box. Not familiar with how Classic is packaged

That's Why a clear definition here is important.
