This makes me so sad. Another beloved great of the game leaves us.

Remember vividly seeing & visiting with Him at the All-Star FANFEST in DC (2018). He was looking pretty good, at that time. This is sad and He will definitely be missed!!

Had the pleasure of meeting him several times at Spring Training in AZ. He was always working with the Fergie Jenkins Foundation to sign autographs to raise money for charity. He was always very friendly.
RIP Mr. Perry.

He was my second autograph ever from a Major League player...the first being Killebrew. I don't remember much from the day he signed, all I can remember is a baseball player signing at a small card show...I scrambled to go from dealer to dealer trying to find one of his cards and then he signed it...I was thrilled as a kid to just get another signature!

Illustrious career with various teams, but I'll associate him always as a SF Giant. RIP Mr. Perry.

Gaylord Perry was a great pitcher and a great SF Giant, among others. It was great watching him pitch at Candlestick when I was growing up. What a pitcher, what a magician, what a showman. He always kept hitters baffled and off balance with his offerings. I have an autographed jar of Vasoline from Gaylord. You will be missed.

I got his autograph several years ago at a card show. (He pitched one year for the Royals.)
After signing a baseball he asked how my day was going. I told him it was going very well and asked him how his was going.
He told me that he was having a problem with one of his neighbors, back in North Carolina. I said something about how I hoped it was something that could be easily settled. He told me he had a peanut farm in NC and his neighbor was complaining about his lions. He was afraid that they were going to get over the fence and eat his (the neighbors) cattle. I thought he was kidding (and I'm still not sure he wasn't) and replied that he didn't really have lions on on peanut farm. Mr. Perry told me he had 3 lions and his neighbor was being silly because he fed his lions more than enough to keep them away from his "stupid cattle".
I will always wonder if he was just having a little fun with me, but he seemed very serious. Either way, it's an encounter I'll always remember.

kcjays, great story! I have one to share, as well. The only foul ball I ever caught at a game was a ball pitched by Perry, and fouled back by Marty Perez in Oakland. Kept it for years, and then saw GP was signing at a local bay area show. Thought it would be cool to have a ball pitched by GP legitimately signed by him. So I get in the autograph line, and when it comes time for my interaction with him, I say, "Mr Perry, I caught this ball at a game you pitched, Marty Perez fouled it back, and I got it. It was still wet!" He says, "yeah, I get that I lot, thanks, pal......"
