Well, at least nowadays. Great pitcher in his prime, but now that he's past the half-century mark (only a couple month older than yours truly), he's just Dad to his rising senior who happens to be a very good golfer (sound familiar?).
So he was at the tournament my son was also in at Penn State White course in State College, PA. My son was in the group behind his son's group, so as I would go ahead to spot for our group, our paths crossed a couple times. Figuring he was simply there to watch his son, I didn't bother him more than to simply say "Hi, how are you doing today?" as I would any of the other parents I see along the way. He was very nice and said hi back, and kept to himself. I did not see him the second day as his son's group was two behind us.
At one point on the first day, he was talking to one of the tournament staff, he left just as we were coming up. I said the staff guy, "Eh, you don't want to talk with me, I'm not a hall of famer." He said that he never talked about that with him and he was very cordial and down to earth.
It's nice to see these kinds of interactions with these guys. You hear so many horror stories about famous people, but I think it also all depends on how you treat them too.
I do wish I had've had a card with me to get signed. :) I do love my signed cards.
