Glenn Beckert is the first Cubs second baseman I ever remember. He started at the first baseball game I ever went to. And he was a fine player who almost NEVER struck out. I must share this. Here are his plate appearances (not merely at bats, mind you) and strikeout numbers for his nine years in Chicago:
1965: 653, 52; 1966: 693, 36; 1967: 636, 25; 1968: 685, 20; 1969: 582, 24; 1970: 632, 22; 1971: 570, 24; 1972: 510, 17 (hit .342); 1973: 410, 15.
243 strikeouts in 5572 plate appearances for Chicago in 1247 games. In other words, he struck out about one time every five games.
He was a career .283 hitter.
For contrast, and I love him, Kris Bryant struck out 154 times in 699 plate appearances over 155 games in his MVP season. One K per game. He is a career .284 hitter.
Just sayin'.
Rest in peace, Mr. Beckert.
