I am very saddened to hear of the passing of Scott Reid earlier today. Scott lived across the street from me when I was growing up and our parents were good friends. Although his big league career consisted of only 38 games with the Phillies in 1969 and 1970, he was a hero and a role model to the neighborhood kids. I still have a signed 5 x 7 official photo of him with the Phillies that he gave to me when I as around 10. Scott played collegiate ball at Arizona State, where one of his teammates was Reggie Jackson. I'll never forget when Scott got married in 1971 and the reception was held in his parents backyard, one of the invitees was Reggie Jackson. When us kids heard that Reggie might be attending, I can still remember as clear as day how we hung on the backyard fence, peering over, hoping to get a glimpse of the A's superstar. We had our Reggie cards and pens at the ready in case we might snag an autograph. Alas, it wasn't to be, as Reggie was a no-show that day. It didn't matter though. At the end of the day we still had Scott, our neighborhood big leaguer, and that was always good enough for me. Rest In Peace, my friend.
