(Man am I going to annoy my fellow Cardinal fans. It will be clear, however, that the bias I use is more age and TV access based than team based. I know the stories of the classic Fall Classics. But I didn't LIVE those series, so it's hard for me to compare them to my choices below.)
I was thinking about this very topic this week (because WS) and love that this forum chain started. My thoughts were:
#1--hands down, 1991 best ever in my book. I would watch that entire series over if they played it on TV. Wow. I hope we get three more WS like that before I die. (But hopefully not with the Twins and Braves.)
#2--after a lot of consideration I went with D-backs over Yankees as #2, but it was a really close battle with...
#3--that 2014 Giants-over-Royals series. It was a real heartbreaker for me, because I really wanted to see the Royals finally win a series. That franchise deserved to (honestly) win one eventually. Glad they finally did the next year. (see...still a loyal Cardinal fan despite my arguments below)
#4--speaking of deserving, just behind those two was 2016 because of three things--Cubs hadn't won in years, Indians hadn't won in years, and frankly that series almost had 8 (7.5?) distinct games: #1-#6, #7 up to the rain, and #7 after. It would have been a great win for either fan base. I'm glad it was the Cubs, though.
#5--the 1993 overall series itself wasn't awesome in my book, but good enough; and Joe Carter's homer to win it all for the Jays? I'll take that one as #5. I just love that moment.
QUESTION FOR CARDS FANS--how can you guys/gals say 2011 and 2006? In 2011 I remember a game where it was ridiculously rainy and cold and no one could catch a bleepin' pop-up (including David Freese, I believe). And weren't there some baserunning errors that series, too? Yuck!--give me good baseball, please. 2006--Tigers might have actually had the better team (MIGHT), but they had like a week's rest while the Cards finished up the NLCS. They were stale and couldn't field a bunt. Again, I'll pass. I could understand '64, '67 and even '68 as answers, but 2011? Sorry, I disagree.
