I will not be accepting any new players to be included into the update. This has literally taken me 14+ hours to compile. And I have a life. I've been working on this from 8-9 yesterday and now 9- whatever the post time is. This is insanity.

Totally fair assessment. I fully admit to not fully understanding WAR, and I appreciate your deeper explanation. I get that it's a complicated and sophisticated calculation that I'll never fully comprehend. And I see it as a very useful tool to get the rough measure of a player. And I'm sure no expert in baseball player worth.
All I'm saying is that there are times it just doesn't pass the eye test, times where it seems off. Maybe a (poor) analogy is pitchers' wins. It's a terrible stat, but over the course of a career, good (starting) pitchers will win more than they lose. Great ones will win a LOT of games. That doesn't mean a pitcher can't have a great season, but still have a losing record.
I guess I'm just looking for balance. Consider everything. If you look at two guys' seasons, don't tell me one must have been better because it generated the higher WAR, end of argument. Heck, people argue over WHICH WAR to use?! It's still a subjective stat, not a god.

Ok, obsure stat alert.
There was this guy named Bill James. He was a statistician and baseball writer. He devised numerous SABR stats and a solution to how to rate players called Win Shares. I think its a bit outdated (It was introduced in 2000), but it adjusts for everything that you mentioned.
I may go into WIn Shares (Again) in another post.
I really should make a blog at this point. It'd be a whole lot easier to post these things. I'm around 24 Google Doc pages into the Update as of right now, with
25. Catfish Hunter
26. Phil Rizzuto
27. Nellie Fox
28. Bill Mazeroski.
29. Albert Belle
30. Tony Mullane
31. Bob Caruthers
32. Pete Browning
33. Jim McCormack
34. Jimmy Ryan
35. Mark Grace
WARPS- (Standard)
36. Lou Whitaker
37. Stan Hack
38. Dave Concepcion
39. Vada Pinson
40. Dick Allen
41. Dwight Evans
42. Will Clark
43. Steve Garvey
44. Harvey Kuenn.
45. Luis Tiant
and
46. Ted Simmons
left to go. I've already done 31 other players and answered some questions in the update.
I hope that it'll be out this evening to tomorrow morning at this point.

I 100% agree with you that WAR should not be the be all and end all for determining HOF or anything else about a player. There are a lot of different advanced stats out there now and obviously everyone can agree or disagree to their value. Though, personally I feel each adds a little more understanding to how players and teams perform/have performed.
The pitcher wins is a good one where advanced stats have I feel helped out understanding of who has pitched well/best in a given season. Once upon a time I am sure seeing a guy like deGrom win back-to-back Cy Youngs with 10 and 11 wins would not have happened.

Personally, I think WAR is garbage. If you already have the #1 pitcher, batter or defensive player, WHO is the "replacement"? Wins-Against-Replacement can't be a factor there. #1 is #1 in the stats for a reason and they can't be "replaced" by someone with lower stats. As for actual HOF players, Baines should have never gotten in since Mattingly and Murphy are still out. Baines never really had the stats over Don and Dale. Shoeless Joe and Pete Rose are out for the reasons of being banned by MLB, but I still think both should be in the Hall. Eventually both will get in, but I think it doesn't happen until Rose is dead. Comiskey also shouldn't be in since his entire team was banned after the 1919 WS situation. Back to Mattingly and Murphy, SO many less-deserving players have gotten into the Hall instead of them. They were just as good in the 1980's as all the other players that are already in the Hall. Neither was ever linked to steroids and they only get dissed because they only had 5-6 really good years. Injuries really hurt their chances at the Hall, but they had the overall stats to make the Hall. I think that Mark Grace and Will Clark should also be in the Hall at some point. Both were really good defensive players and did enough with their bat to get into the Hall of Fame. The HOF is getting really diluted with this executive voting crap. If the players didn't get in during their 15-year run on the ballot, they shouldn't get in at all! I know that eliminates Mattingly, but still, Baines should not have gotten in for any reason. A single WS ring on a team that was full of way better players than him doesn't make him worthy of a nod into the HOF!

Certainly agree with a load of the names here. I think Andruw Jones, Dale Murphy, Jim McCormick, Tony Mullane, and Fred McGriff, are some I totally agree should be in as far as players mentioned. I would also say keep Hack in, and would add Bobby Abreu and Jack Quinn as two that should be in as well. (not asking you to add them because I understand you're busy, just contributing to the discussion.)
