Not a fan of the new name, however, with ties to the bridge it makes sense. I am glad that the WFT formaly redskins havent chosen a name yet because it should have something to do with the location.

I feel like they wanted to use Spiders, but they would have had to pay licensing rights to other teams that are already known as the Spiders. Guardians doesn't have that consideration. It always comes down to money.

Problem is, changing things that are "offensive" to some in this country. It's cancel culture. A lot of teams should be changing names to appease the offended. If "Indians" is an offensive term to you, you have far worse issues than you know. Even Native Americans aren't offended as much people think. It's an accepted term that's been used throughout our history - only NOW is it worth changing?

I'm surprised they went this route. I think having a nickname will be going away because of all this ridiculousness. I hate to say it but the Washington Redskins got it right. Call us Washington. Call them Cleveland. It's going to be dull and boring but we don't want to offend anyone. Why do I feel like my grandpa thinking this wholw country is going to hell?
A business locally here posted they were hiring (like everyone else) on Facebook and all these young people commented how they didn't want to be a slave for a job and a salary. A bunch of them complaining because the company expected them to work on Friday. What the hell? It's just said.
Good luck Cleveland. I will still be pulling for my Milwaukee team this year. You know the Milwaukee....well, let's just call them Milwaukee.

We all could have simply kept it as "Do we like the name or not" instead of delving into why the name changed. Doing that we avoid potentially unwelcome back-and-forth that can lead to, well....

Agreed.
At first I thought Guardians was a weird choice, but I didn't know the local info about the bridge, etc., and now I've seen people linking it to Guardians of the Galaxy, which is fun. I kinda like it. And I think the 2-syllable name ending in "dians" was a smart choice.

Everyone saying they should have changed the name to the spiders; however, that is incredibly ignorant. Do you all even think about all the people who think they are spiders? I for one, am an ally of spider-people everywhere, unlike some on this forum. Ridiculous that some would dare to stoop to that level.
We may need to alter the "Guardians" nickname too. Think of all the offended Guardians of the Galaxy fans who will have their movie trashed by a baseball team like that? Further, the new United States Space Force calls their minions "Guardians." As we know, the Space Force was created by Trump. Do we really want to associate a baseball team with him? Unbelievable.
Lastly, the whole "Cleveland" city name. That's worst of all. Why would anyone want to represent a city where police brutality might have occurred at some point? That name should be wiped off their jerseys too.

Washington owned slaves in his day. When will they have to call themselves "Football Team" only?
Seriously, I think we will see many more name changes and it may end up that it will only be the (city name) (sport) team for all.

They will go after city names after they're done with the nicknames. So every city will just be named its longitude, latitude coordinates. Then if a city has a 69 somewhere in its coordinates, well, we'll just have to move the city.
(This is a joke, please don't cancel me.)
