Schilling's issues have long been present before the events of the past few months, and quite honestly I think soley blaming it on partisanship isn't the whole story. Some of the stuff he said has turned off a lot of voters to where they personally have moral concerns with voting for him. (which, covered under the character clause or not, is a little tough to truely knock people for) I don't agree with Domentho's point though, I dont think anyone had a real shot with all the countroversy surrounding the three strongest candidates. Not to say I wouldn't have considered anyone besides the three - I would have absolutely voted for 10 or nearly 10 guys - but no one else was close nough to make the jump to 75% regardless. I think it was just a weak class. To be honest too, I don't have a major concern with him wanting to be removed. I know some may debate his reasons for doing so, but I don't think you should be obligated to be on the ballot at any one point in time. It honestly seems very clear that nothing will sway the remaining voters he needs to get inducted so it anything it just helps fringe guys get a few more votes by making him be one less name that 71% end up voting for next time.
