I disagree that what is in place isn’t working. My collection interests are almost exclusively Marvel-related and for several years Upper Deck has been the main producer of any major sets. While I don’t purchase anything on e-Pack I have browsed the website quite a bit for research over the years. When it comes to parallels it can get convoluted trying to figure out what is digital-only and what is also physical. Sometimes they’re kind of both, as I’ll explain below.
From the e-Pack website checklist on the Marvel page where it lists all the different sets there are two icons in the top left corner of each pack. First is the dice which will open showing information related to the ODDS of the cards in a digital pack. Second is the e-Pack logo which will show the EXCLUSIVES. These are cards that can only be acquired through the e-Pack site and not retail stores.
Here is the information that comes up for this particular set:
ODDS (edited down to show only base/parallel information)
- “This pack contains an assortment of Marvel’s Thor: Ragnarok trading cards. Randomly inserted into these specially marked packs are the following subset cards: Base Set Parallels (Red (1:3), Blue (#’d to 199)), … “
EXCLUSIVES
- “Collect and combine 5 copies of any individual Marvel’s Thor: Ragnarok Base Set (#0-49) card on Upper Deck e-Pack™ to receive an e-Pack exclusive Gold parallel of that card with the ability to have the physical card mailed to you.”
What this set has on the e-Pack site is a digital-only base set. The other cards you pull in the pack, (base parallel or other subsets), will automatically correspond to a physical card. All the cards sit in your collection on the website until you either trade them on website or request the physical copy shipped out. Those digital-only base cards can be traded but not shipped because they don’t correspond to anything physical. As mentioned under Exclusives those digital-only base cards can be converted to a Gold parallel card. So now the original 5 digital-only cards disappear and you have a Gold parallel card that does correspond to a physical card.
So there is no real physical base set? Actually, there is. The set was also released as regular physical card packs to be sold in stores. In these packs you can get regular base set cards. The ones that are digital-only on the e-Pack website. This is what I meant about them kind of being both digital-only and physical. On the website they are digital-only and can’t be acquired there, but they also do physically exist in the wild.
Here is a pack listed on ebay. The odds on the back mention it contains a “Base card Foil Parallel”. I am assuming these are what COMC lists as the Base set. These seem to have a “silver” foil to them though the color is not specified.
What I didn’t pay attention to previously is that the images of your card seem to show no foil at all. The e-Pack images of the digital-only base set are similar with no foil accents. Every other version has some type of foil or coloring to the background.
Do you recall where you got the card?
