I have a 1992 Leaf Gold Edition John Smoltz with "silver" foil on the front instead of "gold". Anybody else have similar? Backs are idenitical. Have posed the question to Beckett for variation confirmation, their reply was simply "not a variation, just a printer malfunction". Aren't most variations/errors from back in the day the same ie; 1982 Topps Blackless, 1969 Topps White letters etc etc. I could buy the answer a little more if the regular 1992 Leaf cards had the silver foiling on the cards but they don't. Any thoughts?

A lot of gold foil cards from this era have similar issues. It's usually an aging issue where the gold has worn away. It's not a variation or error, just time taking it's toll.

I guess that's possible, but seems like the card would be speckled or splotchy. There is not a speck of gold, every part of the foil is clean silver. Even in the cursive word of "Leaf". Hopefully someone else can post a card of a fading gold Leaf. Thanks for the info.

Need to see the backs. Gold say "Gold Edition" on the back.  If it says "Gold Edition" than it's more than likely just discolored.

Yes, both cards are "#191 Series 1 Gold Edition"
