Hello this is my first post and it is great to be here.
I recently busted open a bunch of 2008 UD series 2 fat packs in a effort to create some sets. While sorting I noticed differences of the grey at the top on the backs of some of the cards. I found the grey ink that runs from the number on the left and fades to white through the player's name to be missing on a handful of cards. On these cards, the grey is also missing for the team checklist title and season highlights title just below the player photo on the back. I have not found any regular player cards in the set with these differences, only Rookie Cards, Team Checklists, and Season highlights.
I'm wondering if anyone else has these in their collection?

There's plenty on comc.com. They don't list them separately as two versions. Even baseballcardpedia doesn't mention them. Leads me to believe nothing more than a printing glitch. Side-by-side (not on top of each other like you show) the picture behind the stats, you can see the "grayless" ones are all a shade lighter. Looks like they missed one of the inking steps. I don't know if Upper Deck used the standard 4-color, or 6- or 8- color process. But for the more vibrant photos they might have used either a 6- or 8-color.

Thanks for the reply. I checked out the site and was able to find one Fukudome missing grey out of the 100 listed on there.

Whoever uploaded that one just happened to have the "grayless" printing glitch. Image should probably be replaced if the "grayless" is a printing glitch. Maybe a member can twitter Upper Deck and ask about these "grayless" cards.

I have a bunch of these grayless cards too. They only appear on cards 701-799. I have them scanned on my laptop, but this will not let me upload them here. I tried.

This is intresting that is for sure. Maybe it is something more than a printing error. Specially if the whole dot no dot is a thing. The question that I have. What does PSA or Beckett grading say on cards like this.

The reason dot / no dot is a VAR is because different printing plates were needed to print the 2 versions. So they were either printed in 2 (or more facilities) or a change to the plate was made between printings. When there is a lack of 1 particular ink - throughout the entire card side, not just one spot - that is indicative of a printing "glitch" or miscue. No plate adjustment was made for that to occur. That is the reason TCDB recognizes the dot/no dot (even though other sites do not) yet does not recognize blank backs / blank fronts / wrong backs / mis-foils. Those are not caused by plate changes.

I did not know dot / no dot was becasue two different printing plates. But the way the cards are they look more than lack of ink. I could be wrong and im not advocating one way or the other, just trying to exhaust options.

Okay, I've settled it. It's a printing glitch. I pulled out my cards and the cards are missing the silvertone inking step. That "gray" area is not gray it's silvertone ink. That is the only place on the backs that the silvertone is used.

I've never been much of an error collector but I guess when I went through almost 1,000 of these cards it was kind of cool to find something different. I've never sent anything away for grading. Beckett seems to recognize blank backs and wrong backs on Topps cards. I might try to submit one as an error with Beckett when everything cools down.
It was nice to see another collector found some of these a year and half later. Feels like I posted this 5 years ago...not sure why? Thanks for all the replies and stay safe my fellow collectors.
