Why do we need galleries here? I suppose if one wants to look at a whole set at once but do they serve a purpose? I know they probably take up all kinds of space.
But exactly what and why do we need them?

I'm just going to guess that you don't understand databases, correct? Because if you did, you wouldn't have asked this is or stated " I know they probably take up all kinds of space."
I don't know what else to say.

Probably not that good. I would guess all databases use all kinds of server space. I just assumed if one needs to look at the card and if someone uploaded the image they could go look at the card there on the cards homepage.
I do see the use of looking at all the cards in a set at once I suppose anyways Dan I figured you would respond

To put it simply, Galleries do not take up extra storage space.

Someday my cards may double in value and then be worth half of what I paid for them.

I’m pretty sure when you are loading up a gallery you are just running a query of some sort that pulls all the existing image data from those cards. It’s the same data just compiled into a report. Please excuse my ignorance if my limited knowledge of databases is incorrect. But I’m pretty sure it’s something along those lines.

This is a correct statement. The image exists on the server in one spot. That image is pulled for the card's page, the gallery, etc. The thumbnail might be stored as a separate image (not 100% sure on that one), but again, that image would be pulled for the checklist page and any other page where the thumbnail image is used.
Thankfully, since forums are pretty much only text, even useless ones don't take up all that much space.

I use the gallery view all the time to organize my cards, especially my Orioles team collection as those cards are from multiple manufacturers and sets and all over the place. Obviously nothing like organizing a set by the number on the back of the card. I find it much easier to have my pile of Orioles cards in hand and just go through each 9-card gallery page and line up the cards to match the gallery. I also hover over the card images to see what year and brand the card is in the address that pops up in the bottom left corner of my browser screen (Google Chrome).
*PRO TIP: If you have a ton of cards in your gallery, such as a team collection gallery with thousands of cards in it and want to jump forwards or backwards across multiple pages without hitting the forward or backward arrow at the top/bottom of the 9-card gallery page a zillion times, change the number at the end of the URL address at the top of the browser. It will be the number appearing after "PageIndex=" at the end of the address. So, to jump from page 2 in your gallery to page 104, you would replace "PageIndex=2" with "PageIndex=104". Warning: If you type in a number that is higher than the number of pages in your gallery, the gallery page will show up blank as there is no data to fill it.
I, personally, have a great need for the gallery pages. Hope this helps.

I rarely use the 6- 8- or 9-card views, but the default one with 10 front/back combinations per page allows me to review a set's images quickly to look for wrong uploads.

Galleries are very helpful to work on updates with variations. I have used them many times to evaluate which image is already present and what still needs to be added versus cycling through each of the card pages individually.
Even if they do take up space, they should stay for those that are trying to make things a little better for others to use the site.

I use them when going through my wantlist as the list format doesn't give a picture and the gallery shows me so I can compare on ebay etc to see if some obscure postcard etc is needed.

I'm mostly organizing over adding right now.
