What was the original intent with the "Wrong Jersey" tag being added to cards? I see people using it on cards where an old photo was used on a card where the player is listed with their new team (not really a "wrong" jersey), I see people using it on players that don't look right in some other team's jersey like Jordan on the Wizards (again not really a "wrong" jersey), and I see people using it on uniforms that are just ugly (again, not a "wrong" jersey). Since the tags were around long before I joined here, what were we going for with that one?

The intent was most likely to keep track of players who were in uniforms that fans didn't immediately connect them with (Willie Mays with the Mets, Griffey with the ChiSox). Seems silly; are those tags still around?

You'd have to ask the person who created the tag.

I assumed it had the first meaning you mentioned (where the photo doesn't match the team linked to the card, like this one of Masato Yoshii in a Mets jersey on a Rockies card). But the other two meanings you cite are pretty funny.
So, I don't know for sure, but my guess would be the pictured jersey not matching the team linked to the card was the original use. But like the "Interesting Background" tag, sometimes it is used by people with a different idea of what that really means.

Would it technically be the wrong ... wrong seems to me would indicate that it is an error of sorts. It would be like a Babe Ruth New York Yankees card with a Oakland Athletics swatch inserted. Just because the player is on a different team because of a trade or team move, does not mean it is wrong. That is my two cents at least.

To me, this is a wrong jersey. There was talk of a trade but it never happened. Topps jumped the gun and airbrushed a Sabres jersey on him.

I would guess that this card was the inspiration for it. Jordan is in the #12 jersey instead of 23.

Could it have been for the instances where the manufacturer admitted the jersey inserted into the card was not of that player? There was a rash of those for a period.

I did some of the Cleveland Barons hockey cards where the player was in his old Seals uniform after they moved from California. I did a bunch of the WHA ones too. Some of those teams moved in season ... more than once. I think it was a slow day at work or something, was I wrong?
