It can be confusing with Panini products because they can't use team names or logos. Next year that should become easier with Fanatics having their monopoly, but I can't wait for the inevitable retired legend being labeled as a Guardian.

Panini is still currently releasing "Redskins" cards even in the 2022 sets when spotlighting a retired player. Not sure how long this practice will continue, cards seem to be really the only product where the name continues to exist.
It will be interesting to see how Fanatics deals with this for both Redskins and Indians players from the past. I agree that it is silly to call them a "Commanders" or "Guardians" player, similarly to how ridiculous it is to buy jerseys of past players under the new branding.

I think Brk / LA actually became the Trolley Dodgers for 1911-12, but I could be wrong.

The reasoning behind my changing the team name was using the argument that the 2022 cards are representing the 2021 season, and the franchise in 2021 was known as the Indians. If we are sticking with year of card release = year of frnchise name, then I will keep that in mind.

I agree that it is weird to list Jim Thome or Early Wynn as Guardians players, but that is the name of the franchise now. Bob Feller has his number retired by the Cleveland Guardians because the Cleveland Indians no longer exist.
My biggest problem with the Donruss situation is that it is very confusing for a team collector. This is not the same situation as the Expos moving to Washington and becoming the Nationals. This is a team basically just changing the IN to a GUAR on their uniform. The name and logo were not changed in order to create a new team identity in a new location. Pick one for the entire team set and go with it unless the cards specifically labels the team the Indians, which I doubt will ever happen again.

No, sorry - this is NOT correct.
That's like saying that any current Jackie Robinson cards should be listed as LA Dodgers because the Brooklyn Dodgers no longer exist.

Not sure if this should go in this thread or not, but it reminded me that a few days ago, doing a search for "Washington Nationals", and clicking on the "Overview", it delivered the short-lived Washington Nationals who existed from 1887-1889 as well. Not the same franchise as today, just the same name. Is there something about the way that team is listed that should be changed? Should I go in and add an IR to those cards to add as a new team? I assume that adding a new franchise or team is not something one just does haphazardly. I also don't know if they evolved into another franchise yet. Still researching that.

I'm mostly organizing over adding right now.

If that incarnation of the Washington Nationals played in the National League, and therefore would be catagoraized as an MLB team, no as of right now there is no way to separate them (see the Winnipeg Jets in hockey as an example) as the database will lump them together. If they played in a minor league or a different league we have a catagory for then yes, a new team can be created and those cards moved (search Hamilton Bulldogs in hockey and you can see there is listings for the current OHL team and the old AHL team) as the fact they are in different leagues allows them to be catagorized differently.

Likely there would be a way for Admin to separate them somehow as I assume...and I know nothing really about how these things are done...that since you can have players with the same name with simple distinctions made to separate them, the same could be done for teams. Because most of those older teams have so few cards, it's not really a huge issue in my mind, but perhaps it is worth trying to sort out some time if Admin wants to.
