Let me start with a card we have 3 copies of:
These all could have been taken from the same jersey* (yes, I understand in hockey these are called "sweaters", but the card even says "Jersey" on it, so we'll use "jersey" for sake of consistency).
The question these becomes, what if they inserted a piece similar to the middle card (2-tone) with the color change on the vertical rather than horizontal? Would that then be yet another variant? What if the swatch contained more white than red, another variant? What f it was 80% red, 20% white? 90% red, 20% white? 90% white, 10% red? Are these all different variants? What if the color change line was even more diagonal? Slightly diagonal? What if we're taking a baseball jersey that has pin stripes? Vertical? Horizontal? Stripe in the middle, stripe to the left, strip to the right? If the swatch is large enough, 2 stripes vs. 1 stripe? Are ALL of these now variants of the same card?
What then happens to the special jersey cards that are "Patch" cards? Since there are no 2 spots on the patch that are the same, each patch card is different. Would all 25 or 50 serially-numbered patch cards be unique variations?
Yes, we saw that the Lapointe card had different color swatches when available for sale, so we got the 3 cards. But I would not call them variations for a checklist for the set.
