Please, for the love of anything, PLEASE scan the backs of the card as well as the front! If you truly have the card in hand, it's not that hard to do (and you get points from it!)
Just do it

I could probably buy the already complete sets cheaper somewhere else, but I like getting my maildays.

I am pretty sure that some of these people doing that are taking the scans from EBay as most people only add front scans to those.

If they are doing that they are not supposed to be doing that. There is also the problem of people using pre-production pictures from online images of upcoming sets.
The general rule of thumb should be only submit images from the cards you have on hand, not any you might get in a couple of months.
As already said scan the backs also it doesn't take "that much" extra time or effort.

I can tell you why I may upload only a front or a back. It is because I can't sit around and rescan something a million times. I try to scan it once and if it is good then I will upload it. If not then I won't. And then sometimes I good preview scan that looks ok on my computer but when I upload it to the photo tool it turns out to be crooked. So then I reject. Also if I can't get a card to align to the extra paper I have in the scanner (to have cards scanned in the middle of the bed since my scanner will cut off sides if I align to the actual sides and corners of my scanner) then I don't bother to do a preview scan.
For that last part, I tend to have that issue with Chrome type cards where the card is warped just slightly where I can't line up the front, but the back rests against my guide just fine. So at least for me that is my excuse. :p

It sure does help. I didn't both scanning backs till joining here, but I had already scanned thousands of card fronts and those cards were long stored and not coming back out just for backs. Lots of backs added since then on new cards.

I try to scan both sides of the cards as often as possible. I don't see how hard it is to flip the card over.. but I guess in some instances, it can become a pain for some people.

I scanned quite a few of my cards some years ago. I still keep track of my cards on my own computer. I only scanned card fronts. I have been happy to add the images here for others to see, but I did not scan the backs. As I come across cards in my collection that I know are missing the backs, I'll try to find the time to scan the backs, but this isn't exactly the highest priority for me.

I have a little cheap scanner and it allows me to do 9 cards without much issue. The easiest thing to do is scan 9 fronts flip over and scan 9 backs then get into Photoscape X and crop and rotate cards.

Outside of TCDB i've generally ignored the backs, or just done one as an example.

I got a new printer/scanner a few years ago, and it cuts off the edges if you line up the card in the corner. I have a difficult time in photoscape telling whether a card is straight or not, so I don't scan nearly as much as I used to. It takes me forever adjusting the card rotation going back and forth and I am never really sure if it is straight or not. I have tried using index cards and ads that come in the mail to line the cards up against, but it seems that nothing I use is actually completely straight. I tried a toploader but it seems that the reflection off the plastic shines onto the side of the card it is lined up against. I do always scan front and back though, just thought I would mention this since scanners cutting off the edges of cards was brought up.
It would be nice if the TCDB had functional tools like photoscape to where users could upload raw scans and state what the cards are, so people with better cropping/rotating skills and also people with more free time to spare could work on them and put them where they need to go. But that would probably take an enormous amount of programming and data space.
