This issue has been discussed frequently, usually when someone reports another member being uncommunicative to PM / Transation Messages. Most have assumed that even though the site show a member as having logged on on a particular date, it may be that the member just never logged off but has been away from his computer for several days. So, yesterday I thought I would try an experiment with my 2 ID. On my main computer I logged in under sandy's singles before I left it around 2:30 yesterday afternoon. The computer went to "sleep" in my absence.
I just got home today and being logged in on my lap top under sandyrusty, I checked my sandy's singles' last Log In date. Lo and behold, it showed as yesterday (it will now show as today as I activated my main computer to type this). So for those who think it a valid excuse that another member may just not be around his computer, that he didn't just log off and therefore the site continues to show him as Logged On day in, day out, that is not a valid assumption anymore.
I am sure someone can imagine another scenario to explain an individual's lack of response to queries but this last one has just been negated.

The only way you can see if it shows whether you logged on or not is using 2 ID. As soon as you turn on your computer, if you are still logged on, it will show you as having been logged on. It does not give you a calendar of days logged on or the actual time you logged on. The experiment I did was using my 2 ID. I intentionally left one logged on when I turned off the computer. On my laptop, I was logged on using the other ID. The next day, I checked on the laptop to see if my other ID showed as having logged on past midnight into the new day and it did not. It only showed as having logged on once I turned he computer back on.

Your experiment sounds incomplete. You only tried one scenario. You just logged in and left the computer untouched, and it went to "sleep". You didn't try logging in under sandy's singles and then opening another window or tab(s) and going about your business at other sites. But not touching/visiting the TCDB sandy's singles tab.
I for one always have my TCDB tab open. I don't close it or navigate away from it. I open a new tab or window to visit other sites; ebay, imgur, facebook, amazon, etc. Of course, I don't have two User IDs so I'd have to stay "off" the site to run the experiment. Then again Admin probably has the answer.

Someday my cards may double in value and then be worth half of what I paid for them.

I never close the TCDB tabs on either computer. There are 3 sites/ tabs that I never close because they are those I want to see first thing in the morning as well as anytime during the day when I go on the computer.
I would assume that if the computer is on, even if I didn't go to the TCDB tab, I would show as logged in as the open tabs are active whether I go to them or not. If someone is an active member here and was on the computer where the TCDB tab is open, I think he would check the site even if fleetingly. So it comes back to proper etiquette to answer a query even if it is to say they will get back to you when the holidays or whatever reason for delay is over.

My interest at this point is not members being logged in and not responding to messages, it's the technical issue of "Last Login" on the profile page. What exactly does it mean and represent. If I login, meaning entering my User ID and password at the Login page, on
15 December but never log out nor get logged out, does the date following "Last Login" change? Going by the wording of "last login" it shouldn't, it should represent the last date I actually had to login with a User ID and password. If it does change, maybe a better wording is needed; "Last Day Active".
I'll try and stay awake tonight and see if it changes at 0100.

From a web site standpoint, the user "logs in" when activity is detected. Better wording from the non-web-geek POV would be "Date of Last Site Activity".
