I didn't want to add anything else to this, but feel I need to address a single point mentioned here.
Billy, the 1991 Donruss cards - Versions a, b, and c are ALL base set cards. There are no parallels. The sets where we've added "parallels" are actually incorrect. They are still simply base cards. And that's the problem. When everyone realizes exactly what a card is, is when this will get better.
For example, in the case of 1991 Donruss, if a player has a RC in the set, which card is the "base card" to be the "true" RC? If that card happens to have 3 versions, then ALL 3 are RCs. But, there's a rule that states parallels and inserts cannot be RCs. So if we added either (or both) versions as parallels, we would be breaking that rule. Basically, no matter what we did, we lost.
If we add nothing, the ERR/VAR collectors were upset.
If we add as parallels, the rules followers were upset.
If we add as all VARs, the people who see too many cards in a set get upset.
Damned if you do, damned if you don't. And frankly, that freaking SUCKS.
There is no bias against parallels.
There is no bias against adding true variations.
All we're trying (very hard) to do is get it right for the hobby as a whole. Will it mess up your collection when some of these more widespread variations get added here? Yes. Big time. My 1991 Donruss set is certainly NOT listed correctly here (because mine is a franken-set of types a and b). Oh well. Sucks for me. One day, I'll fix it. In the meantime, it's only my collection that's affected. If I had cards listed FS/FT, I get that the changes really throw them off, but that's why I asked Admin to send out the e-mail blast to all with the cards in their collection lists. It sucks, sorry. I have to deal with it too.
So, Billy, your statement that "because multiple parallels are jumbled into the base set" is not accurate. There are NO parallels jumbled in. If you consider that to be a parallel, then all modern day sets that have intentional variations - those varations should be listed as parallels. And then in the case of Heritage, where the SPs are "catagorized" into "Traded", "Color Swap", etc, there would need to be parallel for each type. Is this really going to serve the hobby better? Will this really help collectors find their cards here?
Come on people, wake up, and see what kinds of slippery slopes you're going down.
