The ones I collect are, mostly!
Active Players:
Chadwick Tromp
Will Wilson
Retired:
Adrian Beltre
Pat Burrell
Ben Sheets
Kurt Ainsworth
Bud Smith
Sean Burroughs
Troy Glaus
Alvin Dark
Rebel Oakes
Lynn McGlothen
Joe Adcock
HOF:
Steve Carlton
OK, for a common, Rebel Oakes isn't cheap because he's in all the best sets from 100+ years ago. But, I wanted a T206 and I picked out a dude who was from where I grew up. I have a pic of my T206 on his headstone, somewhere. Also, Alvin Dark's freaking 52 topps set me back some change.

If it's of a player I actively collect, I stop caring about a card's resale value once I acquire it. I don't intend to let any of those leave my collection. I guess I'd appreciate if the cards I covet were priced affordably, but I think I'd still mainly collect what I like.

My whole thing about cards is connected to my love of baseball. I still like to take out a handful, read the backs, laugh at the cartoons, and just relive old memories, back when cards were like the hobby itself - fun.

Since 1984 I have been obsessed with finishing sets. So, value was never a thing. Is it nice to have a few valuable cards? Sure. Not why I do it though.

I'd say "Yes" since when I started collecting in the late 80's the only cards I could get were current year cards, and a "good" one had a book price of maybe $2-3.
That being said, this whole "baseball cards having significant value" thing has been around for about 50 years...and it's not all bad. Of all the leisure activities I have, such as attending sporting events, live music, good food, beer, etc. my collection is the only one that's brought me both hours of enjoyment AND now has some non-trivial value to it.
It's not WHY I collect, but it's a pretty awesome "bonus". Sure beats the 30 extra pounds that the "good food and beer" hobby has got me.

I would argue I do already for a good part of my collection. With player collections of the likes of Claudell Washington, Oscar Gamble, Luis Salazar, Terry Forster, Jorge Orta, Sixto Lezcano, Garth and Dane Iorg, etc., I am not getting anything back on this part of my collection no matter how hard the regional or variation of the aforementioned players are to obtain.
