I can always upgrade. I have a 1968 Champion Cornflakes Jim Taylor that is graded 1.5. It is the only one I have ever seen. I had to have it. Now if I could just find a Billy Kilmer to complete my Saints team set.

deadhead11,
I've only seen one copy of that 1968 Bill kilmer Champion Corn Flakes #10N17, and it's a PSA Grade EX+ 5.5. I don't know who owns it.

As a set collector it is more important for me to get the card in the set than worry about condition. This is especially true of pre-1960's cards.

I find for older cards, especially say pre-1980, I like a bit of damage — it shows they have been well loved!

These are in my collection, and I'm NOT looking to upgrade:

(since traded away so someone else's condition requirements are like mine.)

And there are a few in worse condition! Many times if I have a dupe of something in my collection I'll trade the better one since my overall goal is to collect not invest.

While I may look to upgrade if given the chance, I don't want to pass up getting a card from my wantlist due to condition.

My general rule is that for any card older than I am (1976), *any* condition is good condition! It's the joy of collecting for me, and the fun part about getting cards in worse condition is that it lowers the trade value so can get more of the ones I need!
That said, I also very much understand that some folks have very precise condition requirements; when it comes to trading, it's always important to be up front.

IMAGINE the fun those kids had with those beaters. Bring back your memories of asking your friends to trade. Putting it on the spokes of your bike for that instant motor.. Collecting ... ITS FUN for the heart.. Not for the pocket book..

I love baseball. The history, the stories, books... all of it. Beat up vintage cards are a nice cheap way to own a piece of that history.
