New? Maybe live broadcasting of breaks. But box breaks have been around long before the mid 2000s, or ebay, YouTube, Twitter, etc. Team collectors would get together, equally divide the cost of product, and sit around together opening. I remember being asked to join, but back then I was into completing sets.

Someday my cards may double in value and then be worth half of what I paid for them.

There are a lot more of them it seems. I've tried a few and they've either provided me with new Red Sox cards or enough dupes to trade for other Red Sox cards. I still enjoy open the boxes and packs so that will always be the majority of my purchases.

Maybe this is because the article because seems to be very geared toward hoops high end hobby products, but participating to box breaks usually doesn't cost under $100, but more like under $50 and more often under $20. They even been a free free baseball an hockey ones on this site. They were very fun. IMHO, the issue about them is more their speculation aspect that brings price higher, made harder to find products on the shelf (especially during the pandemic) and make the manufacturers producing more senseless variations and 1/1 cards to cater that market. If it is just a bunch of guys who split a box contents together for fun's sake, it is an awesome thing.

In the early and mid 1990s we had a club which had breaks. Our kids had a great time as we let them rip open the packs. We even purchased a box of single cards of one year and set from one dealer and split the cost of them. A cheap way to fill a set that way but hard time figuring out a set and year that everyone wanted so that did not last long.

The box of singles is a very nice idea. Maybe I would be interested to participate in one here.

I'd love to do box breaks where everyone pays an equal amount for a box and shipping, teams are picked at random, and you get all the cards that match your team, including base cards. No profit* for me other than the joy of getting to rip a box and not have to find space for all the cards.
What I don't like is the gambling style breaks. Pick your team -- oh, you want the 23-24 season Blackhawks? That'll be $100 because there is a 0.002% chance you'll get a Connor Bedard Young Guns.
* Maybe a tiny bit of profit... but just a payment for my time and efforts.

Nice article, but I was live streaming group breaks well before Mr. Wax was recording customers opening boxes. I was on all the card message boards in the early 2000s and was the only one who had this concept. One of the people within my group took it to another message board to run their own group and the rest is history. I never operated it for profit just looking to break even, and sometimes lost money because people didn’t pay. I just liked opening packs. Unfortunately never thought of it as a business opportunity or career, and eventually stopped when the message board died out. Guess I could get back into it, but the market is so saturated. Hindsight is 20/20.

Been speculating doing this for a long time where the only costs would be to cover actual costs and not the ridiculously blown up prices I see, where regardless of potential or probable the costs ends up being the average of the entire box.
It would mean no moaning about well so and so got, only issue may be suddenly everyone "bandwagons" Blackhawks.
Where a team has less cards than the others they pay less and would show receipts of my cost from the distributor.
I would do it but am already busy doing something similar through the website, slightly less fun perhaps as there is no "breaking" to be done.
