For a fun project/challenge for myself, I've been thinking about picking a baseball set that has maybe 300 cards maximum, and trying to complete it via trades and/or purchases with people on the site (ideally a high percentage being trade only).
I'm sure some of y'all have done this - any advice you would like to share, or thoughts about this kind of project?
Since I havent done this before, I don't want to make it so difficult that it isn't a FUN project, but don't want it to be TOO easy where i can get all the cards in one transaction. I'd probably do a set from the last 10 or so years, but one without BIG rookies that would be hard to trade for and/or too expensive to buy.
Oh and it would be just a base set probably - not including inserts and variations and such ...

I have been working on 1979-80 Topps Hockey this way and am at 252/264. I already had the Gretzky RC and about 12 other cards when I started. I'm also at 327/396 of the OPC, without the Gretzky.

Will trade for women's basketball, vintage Pittsburgh Pirates, Pirates certified and TTM/IP autos, WNBA autos, '70s food issues and oddballs, 1979-80 Topps and OPC hockey, vintage basketball and soccer.

A good way to start might be to look at the "Members with cards from this set on their For Sale / Trade list" on the Collection Summary page for that set. This will give you everyone who has cards from that set on their list, and how many so you could identify those with a larger amount to start.

Blessings on the quest, wherever that may take you. I've done this many times with various size sets. I'd suggest checking what makes up the base as that may help identify harder to get cards. For example, I've been trying to complete a couple - 1999 Upper Deck Ovation, 2004 Topps Cracker Jack Baseball, 2009 Philadelphia Football - and unfortunately each has it's troubles with short prints or VARs.

I'm hoping to find a set that looks to have a good number of people on the site that have cards available, so that I can start from zero, which I hope won't be too difficult, since the majority of my collection is 2019ish to current.
Worst case, instead of a 200 card set from zero, maybe a 400 card set that I have 100 cards of already, but at that point, it just doesn't seem like it would be as fun LOL

Thanks for the advice! I was planning to do this, so it is nice to have my thinking validated by someone!

Thanks! My plan, to start, is to only do a base set - without inserts, SSP+ variations, parallels, etc. Pretty much what shows on the first page when you go into a set. And then check for what rookies are in it, so I'm not trying to get a trout rookie or something:-)
If i do this, and have a good time with it, I might try to do a parallel set of something, but we'll see what happens!

This definitely sounds like a fun project, especially if you are not in a rush.
I essentially did this with 1984 Fleer - went from 0 to 98% complete primarily on this site (albeit with help from a couple of primary members) and one card away now. I did have to use COMC for some of the more expensive cards but loved going through the journey.
I hope you select something I can help you with.

It's a fun idea! You probably want to list out the years and determine which ones have big rookies so you can take those years out of contention. I imagine you'll have a decent list to choose from once that task is completed and it will just be a matter of determining whether cards are available or not as tenlbpain suggested. Then it'll likely come down to personal preference of design.
All that aside, let me send you some '89 Topps cards ... please ... ;)

Yeah, the short prints I mentioned ARE the last third of the 1999 Upper Deck Ovation set - no variations, just short prints - that make up the set. Still an enjoyable task.
I also seek some of the 1980s OPC or Leaf sets if you wish to venture that way one day. They're smaller and easy to trade for.
