What do you consider to be the top baseball sets of all time? Make a separate list for vintage and modern. List as few or as many as you like.

Anything Topps from 1951-present. Before that, '48-'55 Bowman, '39-'41 Play Ball, '33-'41 Goudey, American Caramel, Cracker Jack, and American Tobacco.
In particular:
2015, 2011, 2010,
2002, 2001, 2000,
1999, 1991, 1990,
1989, 1988, 1987,
1978, 1977, 1972,
1968, 1962, 1960,
1954, 1952, 1951
1949, 1948, 1940
1939, 1936, 1933
1928, 1922
1915
1909
1895
1887
Picking just one or two is difficult because I have favorites for different reasons: most value, sentimental favorites, favorite designs, favorite mix of players, etc.

Is this for all time or the sets you collected or are collecting..? For me, it would be my first set I ever collected, 1975 Topps baseball, 1978 and 1979 Topps baseball...The 75 because that was the first, 78 because Andy Stedman and I would play the game on the back for hours...His mom, Kathy would set our lineups for us. 79 because my brother and I mowed lawns so we could put the set together...1981 Topps because living in SoCal and watching Fernandomania and the Dodgers beat the EVIL ONE'S (Yankees) in the WS, that was cool...I thought Dodger Stadium would fall down when Fernie pitched the place was so loud...1983 Topps just because they looked cooler than anything Topps had done in my collecting lifetime...And the last few years, 2014, 15 and 16, I think the cards are awesome, the insert sets are very cool...I love the Wrigley 100 years set...And last years 2015 Topps football...Just for nostalgic reasons...I am sure there are many more, but these are the ones that come to mind...What a cool thread...awesome...

For me classic sets are the 57 Topps and 53 Bowman Color, but the 52 Berk Ross is an underrated set that doesnt get alot of attention. The 1961 Topps set is also a favorite for a few reasons, not least of which is my birth year.
With regards to more recent sets i think the 2015 Stadium Club is a winner.
I have also become obsessed with all of the more recent tobacco sized cards from A&G, GQ, Topps T206, etc. and will start looking back at the classic T206 (and the not as popular T205 which another writer has commented on recently that just doesnt get as much respect) and American Carmels, etc.
I guess a common theme across the standard size sets is a simplicity of design. The tobacco sized sets are great for their uniqueness as well as the fact i can fit many more cards in the same volume.
Just tossing my hat into this discussion.

Baseball: 1957 + 61 Topps, 1950 + 53 Bowman (Color), If i win the lottery maybe i will try to finish an 1887 Buchner Gold Coin and the 1914 and 1915 Cracker Jack Sets too

1965 Topps. I just love the design.
If you are talking about influence on the hobby, some would say this is going to be ridiculous, but don't forget about 1981 Donruss and Fleer. They were the beginning of opening the flood gates of every company imaginable putting out cards. Yes this led to the Junk Wax era, but with all the competition companies had to innovate. Topps introduced Parallels with Topps Gold and Black Gold, Score put pictures on the reverse etc.. etc.. Inserts I believe started in the fleer products with the All-star cards.

My favorite vintage is the 1966 Topps set. That was the year as a kid that I started following baseball and buying packs of cards. It was amazing to see all the legends come to life for me on cards. I still love the design and card #450 - Tony Oliva - is my favorite card ever. As far as the modern sets go it is definitely the 1983 Topps set. The design is one of the best Topps has had and definitely the best of the post 1980 era.

1965 Topps, perfect design IMHO
1933 Goudey & 1956 Topps are a closed second

it would be cool if someone knows how to set up a poll on the internet where we would go and vote for favorite set for each decade.
I have participated in ones like that on some of the card websites and one of my trading groups and it was fun.
thanks, mark z

I'm going to reevaluate how I collect after the new year. It's just getting way too expensive for the new stuff. Sometimes I just want to buy a pack, not a whole box or even blaster.
