Who's to say it didn't sell for 18 cents 10 years ago? Anyway, those old submissions are irrelevant when it comes to calculating the median price. Just look at the graph with prices by date and that should give you a good enough trend regarding the price.

Not sure which one you're talking about, but the Topps entry was back in 2011.

The 18 cent sales are from 2011 when he was a just a common card. And it's a greyed-out price and doesn't affect the median price.

Someday my cards may double in value and then be worth half of what I paid for them.

Trout was the #25 Pick in the 2009 MLB Draft. That 2011 RC wasn't worth nearly as much then as it is now.
#25 Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim
Mike Trout OF Millville Senior High School, Millville, NJ

BTW, the #1 Pick was Stephen Strasburg (Nationals). The Angels also had the #24 Pick and took Randal Grichuk -- so Trout wasn't even THEIR first choice!.

If you compare the prices that came in and look at their dates, they do corrispond to what the card sold for at that time.
This site shows the values over time
https://www.baseball-rookies.com/mike-trout-57397/
Compare that to the green daily changes from TCDB
https://www.tcdb.com/Price.cfm/sid/58238/cid/3085832/2011-Topps-Update-US175-Mike-Trout
It is in line with what is reflected. The last time it shows .18 from sports lot was 4/9/2012, which is what it sold for at that time.

Seems to me like the best way for people to combat their perceived issues with the Sportlots pricing is to start adding in prices of their own. I realize it seems like an impossible task - but if there are cards of higher value (in particular) in your collection, it may be worth it to do a quick cross reference on Ebay and add some links.

Bingo!
If a price looks out of wack (high or low) take a second and look for recent sale prices. If a card doesn't have a value listed, look it up. If a card's price hasn't been updated in over a year... find the current price.
More people start doing this, the more in line with reality the prices will be.
That said, no one will ever be happy 100% of the time. I've found that the same exact card can sell drastically different prices depending on where you look. Card shows have a card in a dollar or 10 cent bin but meanwhile it sells on ebay for $10+. Both cases would be actual prices even though they are far appart from one another.

For as many people say that they collect for fun and don't care about the value of their cards, there sure is a lot of complaining about the pricing information coming from Sportlots lately.
