Hello TCDB Members!
I searched through the TCDB forums and all over the internet for an answer to this question and couldn't find anything on it. I recently bought a large collection of cards and some of the cardboard storage boxes have yellowed over time. It's easily over 100 storage boxes of cards (my garage is very full at the moment). Rather than buy new storage boxes, can I empty, unfold, and repaint the boxes with an acrylic spray paint to get them back to white or even some other color for coding or team representation or something?
My gut is saying no, just buy new boxes because the paint chemicals may leech into the interior of the box and damage the cards inside. But, it would be nice to not go out and buy 100s of new storage boxes for these cards. Your advice is greatly appreciated and I hope this discussion helps other collectors who may have been in this situation. Thank you!

I would not... Boxes may also stick together from garage heat depending on where you live...

Yikes, I think painting them could cause all kinds of unintended consequences. Being the miser that I am, for some old boxes that are yellowed or have writing the end, I fold them inside out. If you don't mind having completely brown boxes, that is a good way to reuse them and allows you to relabel them on the end. Also, you no longer have to worry about yellowing.

Great Idea! I have several boxes that have yellowed and some that have so much writing on them, I'm going to try this.

If you do decide to flip them inside out the cards would need to be in penny sleeves or top loaders or the yellowing may end up on raw cards

I've done collages with old pics, well loved cards and boxscores I collected as a kid in the 70's & 80's. Glued first with Elmer's white glue and then covered whole box with clear packing tape. It's been about 6 years and they seem to be holding up OK.

Similar to 88gibby, maybe contact paper but be really careful to not leave any of the sticky side exposed. To qualify what I said, I haven't done this myself. I don't know if would seal moisture in. Depends on the part of the country you are in I'd think. For example, maybe it's ok for Arizona but not for Florida.
I assume they still make contact paper but I don't know.

Might get a little expensive, self adhesive wall paper (some are pretty thin)...
But aren't boxes a tad expensive these days...
Can't even find them in my area right now....

I am not going to lie I think the yellow boxes are better than new boxes because they seam sturdier. However if you want to change the color or designes. I would get wallpaper and do it with that.

Covering paper is a good option. I know my local Home Depot sells what's called "painter's masking paper" that comes in 12" wide by 180' long rolls for around $3.50. Maybe that would work. I'd hate to by boxes when these are structurally fine but just yellowed. All of these boxes will eventually be moving, sooner than later, to our basement where I have shelving set up and a powerful dehumidifier set up.
Thank you!
