And I don't mean this in a light hearted way. Today I wasted $60 on some Silver Chrome Topps packs (2), chasing after some valuable cards. Yesterday, I wasted $10 on some packs, the day before $40. Part of me is on autopilot, like I can't help myself. It feels like addiction. I'm wondering if anyone has been through feeling this way, and can help me.

That's one reason why I usually stick to just buying cards for my GB packers collection

I think we card collectors all have a little OCD (I know I do) - you need to set limits and stick to them - I only allow myself $50 every payday.

Well, I've done something similar in the past. I used to buy boxes/packs to build sets. Figured it was a waste of money even though it was oh so fun to rip a pack open. As I'm a set collector, easier to just buy the sets (and insert sets if I'm chasing) rather than try to build. If I'm going to go hog wild once i awhile, at least I have some focus.

Now I'm here and my pain is my companion Now I know it wasn't meant to heal The cut is way too deep No more wasted years of sacrificial bleeding I'm the master of the war inside me

I don't know that my experience is of much help to you, but I feel like I went through a bit of the same thing a while back... every retail store I went to that potentially sold cards, I would check for cards and usually buy something. Everything shutting down for the pandemic and the increased scarcity of retail products during that time helped me effetively quit buying modern cards "cold turkey." Using this site, I was also able to take the time to organize my collection, and change my strategy from "acquiring" to "collecting".
In my humble and largely unqualified opinion, there are aspects of card colecting that could be classified as "gambling", "obsession", and even "addiction" . If you are feeling like your current state is uncontrolled and/or problematic, I would suggest that you find someone to speak with about it. I know that's a bit generic, but it's a place to start.
Many empoyers offer Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs) as part of their benefits package that provide some free counseling sessions. You might want to start with something like that if you have access.

Hi, my name is Dan, and I have a card addiction...
Hi Dan!
Just when I thought that I had whittled my wantlist down, I added 1970-1974 Topps baseball sets to my wantlist. Then, when I got those number down to a couple hundred and the trades started to dwindle, I added 1983-1991 Topps football sets to my wantlist. I just received a Jerry Rice RC in the mail today to complete that run. Nearing the end of that run, I added a no name Detroit Tiger to my collection to build a rainbow. I'm narrowing that wantlist down to the SN/10 cards and I even landed a printing plate.
Now, what to add to the wantlist? Do I want to added 1993-2015 Topps football now that Topps (Fanatics) will have the NFL license again soon? Hmmm... Maybe I need a break. Bottom line, I can relate.
Collect what makes you happy, but make sure your budget is safe and sound and your significant other is equally as happy.
First step to fixing a problem is admiting you have a problem. Good Luck!
-Dan

In my opinion, modern cards are too expensive and a high price was already paid just to acquire a "hit". I am lucky to have a couple collections I acquired in early 2020 that I sort through and organize...that's my addiction. However, I don't spnd a lot of time organizing, but I do a bit every day.

Yeah sometimes I feel guilty when purchasing cards. I don't really spend that much money on them, but it is still money spent regardless. I enjoy opening packs, but sometimes I wonder if I should just focus on purchasing cards I know I really want.

Haven't drank or smoked in decades...
For years, threw money at miniatures (MicroArmor, 2400 Naval, Star Fleet Battles etc)...
Have enough lead, if melted down could service a Musket for years.. :)
So now, purchase to fill gaps in sets, occasionally drop $75 -100 on a box...
As long as it doesn't cut into my food budget, don't fret the little stuff.. :)
