Looking for some opinions on whether to buy insurance for my relatively small card collection or continue to buy safes? I have outgrown my safe and I am wondering if I should get another or pay for insurance? I have about 20 completed sets from the 50s, 60s, and 70s with about 30 graded cards. Baseball and Football. Also some sets and star cards from the 80s. I value my entire collection at around $10k. The problem with insurance is they want you to provide an inventory of everything and provide values which takes time. I only have half of my collection put in here. What does everyone else do? Thanks TCDB nation!

Well, one bit of advice. Do NOT use this site as a method to provide estimated valuation to an insurer. Any pricing here is wildly inaccurate and inconsistent. While you can use this to show inventory, you'll need to use eBay and other auction sites as a way of providing real-world evidence.

I've listed my collection on our homeowners policy for years. I already had a spreadsheet with estimated values on it, so we send that to our insurance guy every couple of years. Come to think of it, we should probably do that again soon....

I agree with V3. My collection is thru our homeowners. At one time I did look into getting 3rd party card insurance but the cheapest I found was $100/year per $1,000 of valuation.

I am certainly aware to not use this site for prices. However, I don't really want to price out everything as some of the complete sets have graded cards and the condition is all over the place. Would take me forever to inventory and gather Ebay sold prices. I called my homeowner and they are going to look into it, but is sounds like there is a low limit to this typically. Probably off to the store to buy another safe...ugh. Crossing finger that the homeowner policy will cover at least 5-10 grand of coverage.

Without getting into values and what I have besides sports cards I have my homeowners insurance for all that. They usually ask how much are your possessions worth and they can get the cost of the house and together and bingo no issues. Even the insurance raises the value of what you own pretty much yearly or bi yearly so anything new you picked up is covered.

Check your homeowners policy for coverage amount for collectibles and for what documentation is required.
I have my collection insured through https://collectinsure.com/.
I pay $225 annually for $34,000 worth of coverage. You need to document your collection, which I do anyway in a Google sheet.

How specific do you get on listing your collection? Down to the card? Down to the set?

My collection is mostly graded cards, so I was entering at the card level.
I would imagine a complete set could be listed as such. Partial sets? Maybe? For lots of raw singles or cards from a set, it'd need to be asked of the insurer but I can't imagine they'd expect you to enter thousands (or 10's of thousands) of low-cost cards.
In theory, a link to your collection on TCBD might suffice for docmentation (again, you'd need to confirm, I'm speculating).
