Why not! If its so close and your not going to spend an arm and a leg to get it what's the harm? Of course if you then branch to anything from the early 70's that's a different story...
Start with 1 and if you enjoyed the experience, try another that is close.

Vvvergeer,
I think the reward is seeing those gaps in the set get filled. I have a feeling once it's done, I won't look at it. Then again, it may be an opportunity for me to learn a little about the game during that time period. Flip through each card and learn about the players and what they did (and didn't do) that year. I think the oppotunity was there to complete the set and I figured, why not? If there were 50-100 cards missing, I wouldn't think of completing it.
Best advice ever: Have fun!

switzr1,
It was quite a mountain of cards to go through while sorting. There are about 5-7 duplicates of each. That's only in this second lot. That's not counting the first lot I already had. Once it's condensed down to just one set, I could fit it into a 800-Count box and sit on it for a while and see what happens. If I look at it again in the next year, it's a keeper. If I don't, I could give it to a family member to get them started in collecting or trade it off for some more Orioles cards. Trying NOT to go down that path!!!

mwccards,
I've felt that way with some of the Orioles teams sets I've bought. Too easy to get them and done. Now what? The biggest thrill I got was standing at the .10 bin at the local flea market's card stand and going through the bins over several weekends until I put together a complete Orioles team of that beautiful bright yellow 1991 Fleer set. That's my favorite Orioles set because of that.
Also, I'm thinking if I have full sets laying around, I'll lose my focus.

Beagleshortstop,
Yeah, I have other collections adding to my clutter: art books, coins, guitars, etc... the last thing I need to add is cards. I think if I can keep them organized and keep the numbers down, that should keep a control on it. If I'm going to collect a full set, I have to focus in on a set that I really like the design of and go for that.
"Collect what makes you happy." Great advice!

Billy Kingsley,
Affording it is a good reason for me to hold back on sets. I don't want to have to go down that road of buying expensive cards to complete a set I'm not going to look at. I'm going to have a tough enough time getting some of the older Orioles cards as it is. Adding sets to that might not be a good idea.
I see what you mean about incomplete sets. 2021 Bowman for example. Really? Only 100 cards and three of them are Orioles. That kind of set is a different animal altogether with parallels and inserts. I'm not the kind of collector that chases all of that. Give me a complete team or league, please.
I like the idea of getting a single card for each player. On the opposite end of the popular rookie card chase, has anyone ever put together a "Last Card" collection? A collection of the last card that a player appeared on with full career stats on the back? Just wondering. I like that it puts the focus on the player and their career over just having the card. FiresNBeers is putting together a collection of Robin Yount and related pitcher cards that represent every one of his at bats. That's pretty cool.

bclough69,
I can understand that, especially if a lot of work was done to complete those sets. And once that Henderson is gone, the rest of the cards will linger to some degree. It's like the star players are the glue that holds the sets together.

Billy, I really liked your post. I came to a similar realization a little while back. When I was a kid, I liked cards because they gave me another way to connect to the games I loved watching and playing. I was far more excited about the player and team on the card than the set it came out of. To me, they were like a cross between action figures and encyclopedias. I read them and actually played with them. (I once built an entire fictitious Statis Pro Basketball league fueled by the stats on the backs of my early-90s Hoops and Upper Deck cards. I don't know WHAT the other kids were doing with their time, LOL.)
I never stopped collecting or enjoying the hobby, but I think somewhere along the way I became a "serious" collector, including going after complete sets. Also, as you mentioned, the product changed. When a football "complete" set has every 5th/6th round rookie QB who will be cut in training camp but doesn't have HOF offensive linemen, then a lot of that connection to the real game is lost. Stats on the back (once prized reference material) have practically gone extinct as well.
So lately I have tried to get back to my roots and put less rigitity and more fun into my collection. One way I have done that is tracking down OLs. For example, I bought a nice Tristan Wirfs RC the other day (Bucs are my team) and that is probably the only card from that particular set I'll ever own...and that's OK. Guys like Zack Martin, Quinton Nelsen, Ali Marpet are some of the best players of their day and I don't have a single one of them in my collection. I'm trying to change that.
Maybe Geico will make one of those Dr. Rick commercials for adult card collectors -- "I doesn't matter how many asterisks are on the back of the card; you already have that guy, put it down."

walkingshadow,
The more I'm reading through these posts and writing responses, I'm realizing that I get the same thrill out of completing an Orioles teams set that I can out of completing a whole set. Why move to sets if I already have that thrill. Plus, the Orioles are my team, no matter how dismal their seasons have been recently. I guess dismal seasons makes for cheaper cards! :D

TwinKiller,
I know, right? I'm only three cards away: #83 Hensley Meulens, #331 Juan Gonzalez, and #398 Ryne Sandberg. I'll probably finish it, get an 800-count box for it, and let it sit for while and see what happens. If I look at it, it stays. If I don't, I put it into the hands of someone who will appreciate it.
