I have a bunch of serts from the late 70s early 80s that I don't know what to do with. I probably have a mint Ricky Henderson Rookie but I don't want to break up the set. There lies the problem.

Great thread! I've been a set builder as long as I can remember. Like the other guy said, it's partially an OCD thing, but if I have 760 of 792 of a collection, my brain just says "you have to get those last 32 and then all will be right." I'm fun at parties ;-)
Seriously though, I would agree that part of the fun is tracking the cards down and opening them on mail day or whatever. Finishing that last TCDB trade, or buiying the last few singles on Sportlots, is a thrill. Once the set is done, you probably won't look at or admire it much (the way you would with individual cards or teams), but you'll have that sense of completion. I guess it comes down to what you enjoy doing, and it sounds like you're more into teams than sets, so it wouldn't benefit you to have a full Topps 90 set. You could probably sell it on Facebook Marketplace as a "starter set" and use that cash to buy more Orioles.

I am a football set collector first and foremost. I also collect Toronto Maple Leafs. Last year I had an opportunity to acquire a fair number of Upper Deck hocket cards and most sets were almost all complete. So I started working on those sets. Like everyone else I love the feeling of hunting and finally completing the set. About a month ago I was looking at possible trades and I asked myself 'why am I collecting hockey sets'? I like hockey but nowhere near as much as football and my collecting goals are not to collect hockey sets. So I decided to put them all up for trade except the Maple Leafs. I also reviewed my football sets at the same time and put a number of those up for sale because they didn't really fall into my goals. I realized that there is SO MUCH to collect within my existing goals that I don't want to pile on more and that I should continue to stay focused on what I like....especially since I am still happy and getting enjoyment from it. If that changes down the road I may need to reconsider again.

The nice thing about both of those sets is that you can keep your checklist on here on TCDB and as you come across more cards you can refer back to it and eventually kncok those two out. I picked up a massibe collection of cards several years ago and within it was several boxes of 1989 Topps. I sorted them and then eventually turned them into four 1989 sets before moving the rest away.

I only just recently decided that it'd be fun to collect a set again, but only because I liked the design (1977 Topps) and I figured it'd be more enjoyable to look at if I put it in a binder to see fronts and backs. Leaving a set in a box makes it tough to appreciate or do anything more with as someone mentioned before. If you think you might like to have a set of cards from 1989 or 1990 that you would like to look at yourself, then go for it. If it's just to complete it because you're close to doing so anyway, think of what your exit plan is. Be ready to sell it, give it away, or find a place to store it.
So, uh, who has too many 1977 Andre Dawson rookies lying around?

bigcountry98,
Yeah, I think part of it is that with the addition of this other 5,000 card lot, it puts me close to completing that 1990 Topps set, so why not? In the first lot, I was missing quite a few cards. After sorting this second lot of cards, I'm now only missing 3 cards! But, then again, just because I can, should I?
Also, I have one of your Comic Ball cards and some Calgary Cannons cards if you're interested in them.
Thanks for the reply and Happy Trading!

ComposerMike,
I know! Just sorting the cards is giving me the rush of completing the set. I was comparing the cards I was laying down in my sorting piles to what I already have from that first lot of cards and would get a rush everytime a gap was filled. I'm only missing three cards. #83 Hensley Meulens, #331 Juan Gonzalez, and #398 Ryne Sandberg... well, and of course the George Bush card, but who counts THAT one. There are about 5-7 duplicates of each card, but more are missing for a second set.
Thanks for the reply and Happy Trading!

sfurukawa,
That's the other side (the voice of reason) talking when I'm on the fence about this. Do I really need the cards? I think it's a "because I'm so close, I can" situation. If I were missing 50-100 cards, I would never think about completing the set or any set. I think if I want to complete a set in the future, I should pick a set that I REALLY like because of it's design and appearance. The 1990 Topps set is not that for me. LOL!!!
Also, thanks for helping me out early on with my Os collection!

OfficerZero,
Yeah, I want to try and preempt that situation and that's why I stuck to Orioles and Capitals cards. Like you said, if I do want to collect a whole set, I gotta pick one that draws me in and I like the design. I think this is a case of the pontential to complete the 1990 Topps set was there, why not? I guess if it sits, I can always sell it or pass it along to a family member and maybe get them into the hobby.
