There is currently a suggestion in the "New Feature Tracker" for something similar (if not exactly what's being discussed in this thread):

Thanks, I voted it #1 priority (I think) ... but I noticed it's been open since April 2019. Should I leave a comment in the field or let it go and cross my fingers?
