So I signed up a while back for the mail service where you get an email with scans of the letters you are getting in your delivery that day. I see a trade envelope, great. Leaving my neighborhood I see our mail carrier leaving our community mail box so I grab the mail maybe 10 minutes after it was delivered. The envelope that I saw in the email was there but the sealed back had been opened, so I looked inside and the cardboard "sandwich" which is very popular here is there but the top taped side has been slit opened. The cards were there but the whole thing seemed weird. My wife thought the post office might have decided to search it? I would assume if they were legally searching my mail they would have to get a warrant and if they went through all that, they would probably give it back in another sealed envelope. I have had damaged envelopes where they placed the contents and the damaged envelope into a larger clear envelope with a print out explaining it was damaged in transit. Makes me wonder about an Emmitt Smith trade that never made it to me. Pictures below.

No warrant would be needed, but it would have been delivered in a postal service sealed envelope of some sort.

I know it might only leave out the mailman, but maybe getting a P.O. Box for card trades only might solve the issue ( or at least narrow it down).

Really? Post Office is exempt from obtaining a warrant to conduct a search of a sealed letter?

I've had an envelope opened and no one ever served me with a warrant to okay this.

Any explanation as to why it was examined? The whole liquid, fragile, perishable, dangerous, thing I understand. If they thought it was any of that then they might have authority to do it, but just a random envelope? Huh.
Either way, this one was not resealed or damaged.

i believe when I posted this originally someone (C2Cigars?) said it was probably due to the unabomber factor since he used multiple stamps as this envelope had.

I need to check for the U.S., but in Canada, no letter under 30g (about 1 oz) can be opened. They wanted to change that law, because fentanyl importers were using that loophole. For larger items, postal clerks cannot open anything themselves neither. For example, if a box smells dope like hell, they gotta call the cops to have it opened and get it seized. At the border, they can open anything they feel suspicious, except for the less than 30 g letters, but inspected packages will get an official tape to reseal the package (if they do the job properly.). In the current case, I would place a call to his postmaster or the USPS inspection service. Reading a magazine is one thing, but checking mail for contents is another ball game. If he checks the cards, what stop him from also looking for credit cards, gramma's cash in birthday cards, checks and so on...
