1987 Topps - a good combination of the design and the gum. Ideal for a youngster!

I guess Donruss was also an option during that time but I never saw them as often as I did the other two, and I never bought a pack of theirs until 1992. I didn't go back and finish any of the 1985-1990 sets until two years ago.

For me it wasn't a card or a set but my Uncle Paul. He started collecting cards as a kid in 1960 and he would show me his collection whenever we would visit. It was filled with Aarons, Mantles, Mays, and every other great player from the 60's and early 70's. That began my thirst for knowledge about the history of the game and a desire for my own collection. First year I collected was 1976. The first pack I bought was at the little league snack bar after my first game. I'm still chasing those cards I first saw in my uncle's collection and it has brought me a lifetime of joy!

(new-ish user here)
I had earlier cards from 89/90 but the one set that really got me into collecting was 1992 Topps. Not only was it a decent set in terms of design and the use of decent cardstock, but knowing a local "hero" was in the set is what fueled my passion. I didn't even care about the gold parallel or even the instant-win cards; no, for me, I spent a lot of my lawn mowing money over the summer on packs trying to get Brien Taylor's rookie card. My dad was stationed at Cherry Point MCAS in NC, which was roughly 30-45min away from Taylor's hometown of Beaufort, NC. So, that little connection plus having a summer job and being able to buy packs with my own money really set the stage for collecting for me. Sure, he was a huge bust, but at the time, it was fun and I would definitely do it again in a heartbeat.

I actually started collecting 1979 football cards (those are long gone), but it was the 1980 Topps set. My two favorite cards in the set are the Jim Rice and the dreaded Yankee Reggie Jackson. https://www.tcdb.com/ViewCard.cfm/sid/82/cid/32202/1980-Topps-600-Reggie-Jackson
I still think today that the Reggie card is one of the best looking Topps cards.

I began collecting in 1988 at the age of 4 with the Leesley Bigfoot cards. Still trying to complete the set all these years later. Got a hobby box and ended up with 6 or 7 copies of some cards and none of others. After a recent trade I'm down to less than 5 cards needed I believe. It's only a 100 card set!
However...for many years I believed that the Star Wars cards were my first. My brother got them new and gave me his duplicates...and I remembered them as my first. However, when talking to him about it a couple years ago he clearly remembered that he didn't give me the Star Wars cards until after I had the Bigfoot cards. Most likely he would have given them to me a day or two after the Bigfoot cards but there's no way to know at this late date.
My brother still buys me cards to this day...literally, he bought me a set at the Basketball Hall of Fame earlier today! In fact, a good portion of my collection has come from him. I've been in the hobby non-stop since 1988, I never left.
-------------------------------
VERY slow trading due to health problems. Not transferrable so safe to trade with, just moving is painful and can't always access the cards. 1988 Topps baseball. Must have been late '87/early '88 that my dads mom found some olds cards of his, probably in the attic or something. He had a huge start on the 1965 Topps set ( still my all time favorite design) and that started him back in the hobby. We collect 88 and 89 Topps hardcore and completed numerous sets which were going to help me pay for college (lol). He is still looking for one more card in that 1965 set (the Mickey mantle).Easy to find, hard to find cheap... I continued collecting til '03 or so and am just picking it back up this past year as my sons are getting in to. My dad has put his in storage in the mid 90s but is also getting back into it because of the grandkids...
