I've always maintained that 1966 was the magical year when my life became engulfed in sports - playing and watching. Thus I've stated that 1966 Topps Baseball and 1966 Philadelphia Football are the two sets that I've claimed started my venture into the hobby. BUT...
I have distinct memories of owning several 1965 Topps Football with Joe Namath, Jack Kemp, Bob Talamini, and a few others. HOWEVER...
There's a set of pirates cards very similar to the 1961 Fleer Pirates Bold (R730-4) that my friend Jesse in 3rd grade would play with all the time, simply remembering facts from the back of the cards to trade them back-and-forth to each other. And those may be the catalyst to my interest in trading cards. But not all the cards from that set seem familiar to me. The basic format of the portrait with an event behind it is very familiar, especially Jean Lafitte and Anne Bonney, but I believe Captain Cook was also one I owned and I don't see that on the checklist. So the problem to me in attempting to reconcile this is how I would have come to owning these cards.
If only that green index card box with an STP sticker atop the lid could be found as it held these gems until 1974 when I went to college. That's the last time I saw that box and many of those cards.
