The strike in 1981 had no affect on my 13 year old self. I collected Fleer, Donruss and Topps like an addict looking for a fix. 1994 broke my spirit and I stopped collecting "new" cards and focused on "vintage" cards from the 50's, 60's and early 70's. 1994 also made me stop following baseball religiously and turned me into a casual fan of the modern game and its players. I still followed the Dodgers but missed out on seeing (and collecting) a whole generation of great players. Only in the last decade have I started following the game closely again. A stoppage today wouldn't change any of my current collecting habits which haven't really changed since 1994

No one is allowed to collect during lockout. But you are allowed to send non-union cards to anyone here

In 1981, I was16 turning 17 when the strike interrupted the season. At that point I decided to stop collecting new cards (I wasn't collecting Donruss or Fleer) and did not buy any cards in 1982. Then in 1983, my mother bought me some packs of Topps and I was hooked again. I collected the 1982 set by going to card shows and buying singles and in 1984 started collecting Fleer as well. In 1988, I started collecting Donruss. Subseqently, I bought complete sets of 1981 Fleer and Donruss and finished off all the remaining Fleer sets by buying singles at shows.
The 1994 strike did not affect my card collecting, but I did get engaged that year (married in 1995), so that was the end of my complete set building success.
A stoppage in 2022 will not slow me down although I am hopeful it will be resolved without wiping out too much of the season.

I think collectors will still collect. I've collected since 84 and have no intention to stop until fanatics takes over. Then I will just go back and work on older sets.
The flippers are a whole different game. It may stop the flurry of people eating up retail as there is no market without players playing... No stats means no chase for big name players or RC's. No profit in buying to sell at cost.
Or at least I hope that's what happens. I miss running to Target to get cards.

From the collectors stand point I don't see anything. Even from the card company stand point I don't see anything for this coming year 2022. Now for their 2023 products and the "updates" sets for 2022 there might be some problems.

Considering the size of some of the contracts being signed, I suspect the owners don't expect the lockout to last into spring. In fact, for me some of these contracts are a bigger turn-off from the sport than the fact that there might be a lock-out. We grumble but the collectors will continue to collect, maybe shift their sights but collect none-the-less.
