So of course i have some cards stuck together and even though I can get some apart with no damage, some refuse to let it happen. What do you guys do with these cards? Keep them? Throw them away? Or is there some way to get them apart IE steam maybe or something else? It is ver frustrating to say the least. I threw out a few cards due to this already.

I tried a bunch of different suggestions but was most successful by microwaving them.....short bursts at a time......yes they will burn if you leave them in too long. I saved only about 30% as some were still damaged but its better than trashing all of them. I found water based solutions...ie steaming them and freezing them which simply left them water damaged on top of ink lifting off the cards.

For the most part, the damage is done, unfortunately. In my experience, the method which results in the least amount of surface damage is to hold 20-30 cards at a time with one hand on top and bottom, and with the other thumb, press in the middle of the stack, flexing the cards, until several pops and cracks can be heard. This is the UV coated surfaces releasing from each other. Flip the stack over and do the same thing, flexing your cards the other direction. Again, there typically remains some damage in most cases, but this method seems to be the most satisfactory in my opinion.

Thanks guys. Looks like they will probably be a lost cause. I have tried flexing the cards with a little success but most of the time with no luck. I had two stuck and had it coming apart nicely and the very edge of the corner wouldn't come apart so I pulled a little harder and it ripped. I am finding in both baseball and football. Luckily I haven't lost but 1 Roger Clemens card so far. The others are all commons. But I still hate it.

I can usually flex them and get one side to pop off thus giving me some leverage to remove the card.
On a more sticky note, I've discovered what 40 year old gum can do to 1982 Topps Football cards.....the gum is even more gross and destructive than it was 40 years ago......

That has to be impossible....lol. That gum was always disgusting. I have some cards from the era and you can clearly see where the stick of gum was. The card companies probably never thought about the values of these cards in the future.

My theory is that someone in the chain of posession (these are from an online auction in PA) finally opened these recently and thus the gum had 40 years to meld in to the cards. Strange geological, or gumological, formations resembling something from a cave. Thankfully there are multiples of most cards so I had non-gummy choices for my collection.

Flexing has worked for me too, but not 100% of the time. I bought some 91 Stadium Club football wax a few years ago, and one box was almost a total loss, but I did save some good cards out if it this way.
As for the gum, what do you guys do? I keep some of my gum-stained cards because to me, they're kind of like a badge of honor from a bygone era. My wife got me a 90 Topps FB box for Christmas a few years ago, and I chewed the gum from one of the packs. (She was perplexed.) If the stain is so bad it might damage other cards I may throw it out, especially if it's a common, but I have kept a lot of them.
Do we have any serious gum-stained card collectors here on the DB?

Best way to get rid of the cards sticking is to spray them with a mist of pigeon milk.
