I have very little experience in the area of redemptions so I'm wondering how common the following experience is. In 2009 I had a redemption card of an Upper Deck Exquisite Patch Auto of a PC player that I sent in during the redemption period. It remained unfulfilled for 6 years as Upper Deck said they were having difficulties getting the player to sign, and they offered to send replacement cards of other players. I decided to take that offer and they sent some other cards (I don't remember exactly what I received in returrn, but I don't remember being too upset at what I ended up getting. I would have preferred the original card as others from that set are selling for quite a bit these days). I've never seen the original card in the wild, so I suspect it was never ultimately produced.
Anyone else have similar experiences? Is this a common occurence for redemptions?

I've had similar experiences, mostly with Topps, although never waiting years for the original. I've always been too impatient. My guess is that they give up on ever producing the card after a certain amount of time.

Yes, we had 2 or 3 redemption cards for a golfer (AU, MEM, SN) that were eventually replaced with a stack of other similar cards. If the person is uncooperative, there really isn't much the card company can do.

So the card companies issue redemption cards for cards that don't even exist, and they hope they can make them exist if the redemption is sent in? Wow, sounds kind of shady, like the old bait and switch scam. Surprised they get away with that.

Card companies should just do away with redemptions. To me it's false advertising, promising a card that doesn't exist. I'm surprised they aren't sued over this practice

Someday my cards may double in value and then be worth half of what I paid for them.

I'd be curious to know who these players, cards were of. Especially the golf one. I have some expired redemption cards i have pulled that i am sure were never sent back out to customers as i have never seen them for sale.

My understanding is that the redemptions are created if they can't get them signed beforehand, not necessarily "made to order" only if the redemption is actually sent in. But like rebates, perhaps the companies also bank on the fact that a percentage of redemptions are never sent in or sent in on time.

Well I stand corrected. Apparently, there is a Class-Action lawsuit against Panini over redemption fraud.

The golfer was Victor Dubuisson. Cards were made by Upper Deck. Thankfully, we didn't pay much for the redemptions, but we did wait almost 18 months before UD finally sent us stuff to clear their queue.
