Have any of y'all ever purchased a set of cards that obviously came from a smoker's house? Any one successfully experiment on ways to remove that smell?
The last batch I bought from a 1978 set has a pungent smell -- I can smell it just from handling the cards.

Smoke molecules are microscopic bits of oil and tar, which adhere to surfaces like you would imagine. Baking soda and activated charcoal are your best bets. Put baking soda or charcoal in a plastic bag, put the cards on top and close the bag. Give it at least 8 hours to absorb and neutralize.

I had good success taking a Rubbermaid tub, separating the cards slightly and laying them around the bottom, then taking some papertowel which I spreayed with febreeze, put the sheets on top of the cards, closed the lid and left it for a couple days.
The febreeze smell stayed for a few days afterwards, but then they didn't smell at all. Unfortunately, it won't fix any of the yellowing of white borders, but at least the cards don't smell.

I once bought a bunch of cards that smelled like wet carton.
Put them in a sealed box along with a cup of baking soda, left them for a week, and the smell was gone. I arranged the cards so that they touched each other as little as possible.

I don't think I would ever in a million years notice that. On clothing : sure, of course. But on cards? I don't know, to me that sounds far fetched.

Maybe you just haven't gotten any bad ones yet, or maybe you smoke, LOL. It's not uncommon.

I thought that way until I bought a small non-sports set of 90 cards on eBay. It was clear it came from a smoker's house.

The results are WELL worth the price of the materials.
Be sure to get a container that seals well. Also, be patient. It takes a while sometimes for the smell to dissipate.
