I have heard it happening but just seen it for my self.
Purchased a card from COMC SN 241/199. It is listed that way but it is hard to see the 2 because of the COMC watermark. It may be a year before I get it home so can not verify it. I did ask CMC about it but who knows when they will get back to me.

What card? Player name, manufacturer, name of set and card # would help in answering your question. I put in 241/199 into Only Sold Out on COMC and nothing showed up.

You realize their card numbering and serial numbering is crowd-sourced, right?

I have added a large portion of my inventory to the site, and currently have trading turned off (details are in my profile). I have (finally) unearthed my 2 very large boxes of Star Company minor league sets and they are available (email for details).

That's the number I see. To get a better look (magnify) at a card, push ctrl & shift keys, then + and tap + to zoom a larger scan of card, to minimize push ctrl & shift, then tap - to return to normal 100%.

You see the 241? Yes I zoomed it and used my manifing glass to help out and that is what I see on my card. As I'm having my cataract remove this month it may help.
As far a crowd-sourcing as far as I know they only use that to correct errors. It would be real hard to do some of the SNs as they have their water mark over top of them.

They have Serial Numbers in their "contest". That's where they do their crowd-sourcing.

Looking closly at the card, I am almost certain it is 135/199. Like vrooomed said, COMC has contests and people will key in what they see (which may only be a second or two) so they can earn credit on COMC. But, there have been cards that have been numbered about the announced print run. Usually it is a case of a card getting the wrong information keyed in during the serial number foiling stage or the card was held back as a replacement card.

OK Eveyone is looking at the Sold out card not my card. I can see the diff in the SN as I look at each. AS I have not shipped the card home and it is in my inventory it do not always show up on the sold out page for some reason. I have seen that happen to cards I have purchased before. I have purchased the only card and it does not show as sold out.
Yes I have done the conests before and gotten a little credit. But they do not do all the cards and information through the contests. I though it was done like the reporting an error on a card.
As far as I can tell it looks like 241/199 but it may be 141/199. I will find out when I get it home. The way it looks it may be in 2022. As I'm buying at a very slow pace.
