I am wondering if you are collecting set, and theres a "promo" card of another sport, issued with a set (but not numbered into the set you're collecting). Do you collect it as part of the set? Or do you ignore it?

I just sorted a '92 Stadium Club Astros team set and included a '92 Stadium Club Members Only card with it, which is part of a multi-sport set. Not exactly a promo, but I'd still include it if it was.
It's all up to you; no rules or best practices here.

I probably could've worked my question better, do you consider that card to be a part of the members only set? Or part of the Astros team set? I assume they are both baseball, my question was generated from a football card/multi sport card issued with hockey sets, so its listed under hockey. I said promo, but was thinking not numbered into the set it was obtained from.

I consider it part of the Member's Only set.
I'm a closet set collector, but probably the closest I get is something like the '87 Topps Baseball, where I also consider the Topps Traded, the All-Stars, and Wax Box cards as part of my "set" to complete.

Initially I ignored it, but over the last year I've changed my thinking. If tehre were promo cards issued for the set, whether it was for that set, another sport, advertising inserts, etc. I've decided to build my sets to account for those too. As Billy wuold say, a set documents history and these cards are part of that. Of course, doesn't help that I pretend I'm a master set collector (within reason of course) so I count these towards that.

It sounds like the word "set" is being used loosely in this discussion, so I will answer the question in two parts.
If I am collecting a set, then I am only interested in cards that are part of that set. I rarely do this, but it does happen occasionally.
On the other hand, if I am collecting a product, then I want any cards that were included in that product; base, parallel, insert, promo cards for other products, cards that are part of a multi-product insert set, contest entry cards, etc. I also want any promo cards for the product I'm collecting that were distributed in other products.
I get the sense that some people use the term "set" interchangeably with "product" because of the length of time that Topps Baseball had no such thing as parallels or inserts.

My preferance is to avoid all ERR cards and just collect the COR versions. No extra cards that are not numbered in sequence either. My only exception for that last part is because I pulled it from a pack back in the day: the Action Packed Neon Deion card.
