There is the possibility of pre-war players that appeared on a modern insert even though they have never had their own card.

That's an excellent point Corky! I didn't even think about that. BUT, it's quite likely that those guys would have had a Conlon base card in the early 90's too.

Huston Street's first ever card in an MLB set was a Team USA insert in 2002 SP Authentic. His first MLB base cards were 2004. Probably others from that set too. He was the only guy I verified. I'm not counting the 2002 UD USA set as an MLB set. But SP Authentic was.

I'm going to reevaluate how I collect after the new year. It's just getting way too expensive for the new stuff. Sometimes I just want to buy a pack, not a whole box or even blaster.

Good call, I forgot about Team USA sets. Probably the same for World Baseball Classic sets with foreign players, especially players from Cuba and Japan.

But the OP's subject question is a player's "MLB" card.

Someday my cards may double in value and then be worth half of what I paid for them.

this Jeffrey Larish card in 09 UD Siganture Stars, is his first and only card in a mainstream licensed set [UD, Fleer, Topps etc.]
it's an auto card that is short printed [ I am saying that, based on the fact there are none listed on ebay, COMC etc.], and there is a triple auto variation SN30
He never got an RC in any MLB licensed major league set. He's in some UD Team USA sets, Justifiable, Just, Choice and Tristar
He played in about 100 MLB games from 2008 - 2010, mostly for Detroit, so the reason he does not have an RC is not that he failed to get promoted from AAA. It seems he was simply overlooked.

That's just Topps circumventing MLB rules. They aren't allowed to put a player in a base set if they've never played in an MLB game. But if they call it an "insert" they can get away with it.

Well if my example is thrown out, I'm stumped. I bet it has happened in football. Pacific used to include an insert set of obscure guys in some releases.
