Years ago I used to buy larger lots of Husker cards. Until I had over 7,000 extra Husker cards. Which I traded for 500 Husker cards that I needed. I was told I was very lucky to get that many. The last couple of buys I only got one or two commons (I needed) out of a $15.00 pruchase.

I once bought a 700 card lot of 1976 Topps football on eBay. I thought it would give me a great start to a set build. It turned out to be 150 or so unique cards 4x-5x of each. Some of them are still on my for sale/ trade list.

I've been pretty lucky on Ebay, with no really bad horror stories like so many people have. Of course, I don't do Ebay as much as some people do.
My worst horror story is I ordered a complete set of 1989 Maxx- a somewhat rare set- that included the promos as well. Even though the seller listed that they were non-smokers, the cards all reeked of cigarettes and I basically can't even touch them without having breathing trouble.
I need to replace them but I have a serious mental block on spending money for something I already have.
-------------------------------
VERY slow trading due to health problems. Not transferrable so safe to trade with, just moving is painful and can't always access the cards. I got a huge baseball set like that. I actually complained that they were smelling really bad, but didn't say what. THey reduced the price to pretty much the shipping. I also have not replaced them, but I did leave them out in a room in my house that has windows on 3 sides, so I opened up when it wasn't rainy and had them all out there for a while (like a week or 2). Helped, somewhat.

I've been pretty lucky with eBay (I hope there's not a really believable fake in my collection somewhere), but close to 20 years ago I bought something, don't even remember what it was now and never got it. Turns out the buyer, who had good feedback at that point, must have decided to quit and had a whole bunch of auctions end at the same time. Vanished and left a whole bunch of buyers with nothing.

I don't know if this is stereotyping NASCAR fans..but I purchased some Ernie Irvan cards several years ago and they all reeked of what I now realize was cigarette smoke. Had I known better I would have returned them. I think I threw out several of them and tried to air out the rest. I don't know what they smell like now but at the time they smelled alright.

About 12 years ago, I bought a 2005-06 Upper Deck Artifacts Bill Guerin 1/1 card out of Ontario, and never received the card, but foolishly waited too long to make a claim. Then about a year later, the same card showed up on eBay again, but listed by a different seller located in a different city in Ontario. I bought it again, and now it's part of my collection, but I had to buy it twice to finally get it.
