The broad spectrum of what I'm about to ask about has certainly been brought up before, beat to death, and brought back up again throughout various threads, but nothing as specific as what I'm looking for.
Recently, I picked up my oldest card to date: 1909-12 Murad Cigarettes West Point Cannons. It's currently the crown jewel of my Army West Point collection (along with the Glenn Davis cut auto I secured). It's pretty well loved (even a little ripped at the top) but at 108 years old she's never looked more beautiful. And now I want more of these. I've got the bug and I want to build a tobacco set, and this is the one I chose (for my first one...I have a feeling there will be more).
Now, I've made it clear over time that my preferred storage method for my personal collection (sets, players, Reds, etc.) is binders. I like to see my cards whenever I want, not dig through a box on the shelf. So, obviously, I'll be paging these up. Here's the problem though: they're an odd size. If the figures on the set overview page are to be believed (I haven't measured myself yet, but I believe it), these are a little too big for UltraPro's 2 1/4 x 2 1/2 pages, and since they're too small for any of the next largest sizes, I might as well use full-size pages.
I know that seems like a drastic jump, but my next though is well, if I'm going to use pages that are too big, why not put them in penny sleeves before putting them in? And since it's only a 150 card set, a box of full size pages will give me 83 left over for other purposes. Anyway, I don't want them to slide around, and I sure as heck don't want them to fall out (remember, I like looking at these; this binder will be handled). Has anyone ever done this before? I'm not looking at any supplies right now (I'm at work) but the image that sticks in my head tells me the sides might be a little tight.
Any other suggestions? Are there specific inserts for pages to handle situations like this? If there isn't, why has no one invented some yet? Would trimming up card savers and using them in the same manner work? Anything else I'm not thinking of? Thanks in advance for any help and feedback.
I'll never quit collecting entirely, but I am downsizing. Check out my COMC store and help me thin out what I don't want so I can buy cards that I do want. See something you like? Send me a message on here, and we can knock the price down quite a bit. I'll even take a bit of a loss if it means getting you a card you really want.
