Does Topps need to hire someone from Marvel for the creativity department? Yes, I agree it reminds me of Donruss.

Good points, mkaz80! As I commented in a very popular card blog, I really like this design. Except for the large slash elements that interfere with the player image (draws the eye away from the player). And those extra asymmetrical border elements. And the small player name/position text. I'd prefer no border so that we can have a larger player image but I'll live with it. Has there ever been a set that has satisfied 100% of the people 100% of the time?
There is a lot of room for improvement (as usual) but bottom line is this will be another set that I will be happy to attempt to complete.

I can't say that I LIKE it OR that I HATE it. It is certainly NOT a TOPPS card though! It's totally a Donruss-style design. Is Topps that threatened by Panini?! They should be!!! Panini is dominating the card world and Topps is just standing by watching it happen as they continue to fall behind in sales. Topps needs to do something better, but copying Panini is NOT the way to do it. That design mostly sucks when you see that it is a Topps product. I'd much rather see Topps use the 2020 Utz design for the 2021 Topps flagship design than this crappy mock-up. Topps really seems to be completely clueless as to what collectors want to see from their products and they have been for many years now. I still think they are mostly surviving off of case-breakers that just flip everything they pull and have absolutely no interest in the sports or cards. Flippers and case-breakers will not keep the hobby alive over time! When the real collectors stop buying boxes & cases completely, the supply is far greater than the demand. Topps fans keep swearing this isn't going to happen, but it is slowly happening no matter how many people say it isn't happening. This "Donruss-design" from Topps is a shocking turn to me!

Not a huge fan. Perhaps it will grow on me. Don't care for diagonal bars that come from the left and cut into photo. Player name needs to be bigger also. Will be 53rd year of collecting Topps base sets, so I'll be collecting them, like 'em or not. hopefully the back is decent.

Meh, not my favorite. I like borders but this is too much and too busy. I agree with whoever said left side slashes were too big or shouldn't be there at all. Is that honeycomb on the sides or chainlink fence? And what's up with the football hashmaerks on the left side of the pic? Maybe on a football card. I'll try to complete the set whether it grows on me or not I suppose.

Reminds me of a mishmash of 1987 Donruss (honeycomb across the back) and '93 Ultra with the beveled bars.
I've got a complete run on Topps sets from 1970 to 2020 (and '59, '60, '64, almost '68, and '69) and that's where it will end. Stopping the current flagship sets since it's an even year. Will continue Allen & Ginter when the designs please me. That group is hogging all the creativity at Topps. The Flagship team is too hung up on rookies and generic star player inserts.

I'm continually entering tradeable inventory. Full want lists are at https://thecollectivemind.blogspot.com/p/baseball-wants.html Use the green tabs to navigate. Have entered 1994 thru 2021 baseball and 2009 thru 2020 football so far. Don't have many newer than 2020 except A&G in baseball, and very little beyond 2019 in football. My extra hockey is older than that. The best I have for a tradelist otherwise is https://thecollectivemind.blogspot.com/search/label/Disperse%20the%20Hoard

I like that it has a unique and new look. I like it, but do wish the name was a little bigger.

I think what urks me the most is that cards used to be completely distinct from year to year. Modern Topps cards really dont vary that much on first glance. Bringing back borders is nice, but this is not the way to do it. Honestly, I wish they would go back to stages photos rather than gameplay pictures from the previous season.
