hi,
Im new to the site, but have been collecting for years, even if my collection is small in comparison to most here. A stupid question, but I have an unopened box of 2004 Upper Deck First Pitch, and an unopened pack of 1989 Bowman. The Upper Deck box seems to have a label from the manufacturer that says do not open, but I don't. K wi whether to open both items, just one, or leave them both unopened. Any ideas from others that are probably much more experienced at this than me would be appreciated

Personal preference, really. I would open the Bowman. But that's just me. There is a chance the 2004 UD could be bricked together inside the packs. Impossible to know if the box is sealed. Maybe that wasnt a year with the sticking problems though. I get no pleasure out of unopened packs though. Other people do.

I'm going to reevaluate how I collect after the new year. It's just getting way too expensive for the new stuff. Sometimes I just want to buy a pack, not a whole box or even blaster.

I say open. Otherwise what’s the point? I even open old factory sets to see the crisp cards and special inserts.

First off, welcome to the site (even though you've been here a month or so). Next, your question is really a personal preference. Do YOU like busting open packs? If so, I say do it and see what you get. But I have a question about your post. Why would the UD box have a "Do Not Open" label. That's just odd to me. I, personally, would open it to see what's inside. As for the Bowman pack, I couldn't help myself if I had it. I would have to open it, hoping to pull a Griffey RC. But there are several other good cards to pull from '89 Bowman that could make the pack worth opening.
Again, I'd open everything if I owned them.

Thanks, I Ve decided to open everything. I guess to me, it'll take a couple of months before I feel that I'm not 'new' to the site, I'm still trying to navigate my way around, and get used to posting or communicating in online forums, which I haven't really done since my teenage years. That being said, this site is amazing!

Welcome to the site! It won't take that long to feel at home. I've been on here three weeks and this is already my happy place!
The people on this site are amazing. There are no stupid questions. There is no judgement. People disagree and do so with tact. It's kind of unreal and other websites could learn from the members here.
To your original question... Open them. Why not? That's just me.
I see you decided to open them both. You should post here if you pull anything good. Always happy to see someone get something amazing.

Again Welcome! You posted your decision (which I fully support! What is the sense in having them if they can't be enjoyed) but like Spaz I am curious about he "Do Not Open" sticker. If you could post a pic of that would like to see it. I wonder if long ago it was in a shop and they had "display" boxes on the shelf or behind the glass of new product that they kept aside.

Welcome to the site. You'll find we're more collection-oriented than investment-oriented. We want to see all the cards, not the packs. The only reeason I have any unopened stuff is because we already opened so much of it, there's nothing left to see (older stuff) or we haven't had the chance to bust it (newer stuff).
Everyone was already pretty clear, personal preference. If you're going to open them, enjoy!
As for the sticker - this is a retail thing - I've seen them before. This is a warning for the STORE not to open them and sell the packs individually, but rather it is meant ot be sold as a box.

-- Dan -- Note: Please see my profile for more info regarding trading (section updated 10/25/2023). I have added a large portion of my inventory to the site, and currently have trading turned off (details are in my profile). I have (finally) unearthed my 2 very large boxes of Star Company minor league sets and they are available (email for details).

No brainer! You MUST disobey the 'do not open' sticker. There is no other option.

Great explanation, Dan! But I've still never seen that before. There was about a decade there when I was only busting retail products. The last card shop around had closed and I wasn't buying online yet, so everything I bought was from retail stores (KMart, Walmart, Big Lots, etc. - no Target here then). 2004 was late in that decade of retail-only purchases.
