I was looking for a certain box of cards and I came across this box of Topps.
https://www.ebay.com/str/SteelCityCollectibles1/Baseball-Boxes-Cases/_i.html?_storecat=2&_pgn=2
Did they fall and bump their heads? Who would pay this much money for a box of cards?
Obviously there has to be someone out there that does buy these or they wouldnt be selling them, I guess. I was just wondering, if you had the money, would anyone here consider buying one of these boxes?
I myself wouldn't even consider it. Way too much money. Even if I had more money than I knew what to do with.
Do the players get anything for signing these cards? (Thinking out loud here.)

I suppose there are actually people who'd spend that type of dough. So far, 18 watchers... Too rich for my blood.

The crazy thing is that they have done it twice now. They players do get paid to appear on cards and get even more for autographs.
Edit: forgot to answer your question. No, I would not spend that kind of money on a box, but I'm comparitivly poor. If I had that kind of money to play with, yeah, I probably would. I'm neither a drug dealer nor politician so not going to happen, lol.

VERY slow trading due to health problems. Not transferrable so safe to trade with, just moving is painful and can't always access the cards. Even if I won the Powerball lottery, I wouldn't waste any of the money on Transcendent! It's not worth the money. If I didn't pull any cards of my team or other players I collect from the "hits", I'd be upset with the product at that cost. Then the only option is to try to flip the traders to get some of my money back. Not very likely from a product with such a high cost! I can't believe that Topps did this again.

I think part of the attraction with this is an invite to some type of party with Mike Trout. This " event", may even be sponsored by Topps. I watched a break of this on the internet done by Layton Sports Cards, who was opening a few cases. ( look them up on Facebook) - the video(s) are usually posted.
The owner, Rich Layton was willing to buy the invite for 5k - and he was looking for 3 invites = 15k.
WAYYYYYYYYYYYYY to rich for my blood, so I never researched it any further.
Happy New Year everyone :)

As simply as I can say it, "No!"
However, I have found that I WILL surpass my self-imposed max of $20 for the right card. In my off-and-on collecting habit as an adult going back to 1987, I'd only spent $20 on one card; 1996-97 SkyBox Premium RC #55 Kobe Bryant PSA 8. In October of this year I purchased a 1960 Topps ASR, RC #316 Willie McCovey card for $21.25. Then, my biggest single card purchase came this past November; 1969 Topps RC #260 Reggie Jackson for $35.00.
My dream card is a 1951 Bowman #305 Willie Mays RC that sold recently for $1444.00 as a PSA 1. I can safely say I'll never own that card because I'd have to do more than sacrifice, I'd have to justify it to my own conscience. But that would be rather easy because I don't have that kind of money, especially now that I'm retired.
None of those approach the $28,000.00 for the box of 1-of-1s, however, even if I had the riches of Solomon and claimed I wouldn't spend that much money on a card, I probably would because I know my nature over the past few months has been to surpass a rigid financial limit when the right opportunity came.

I've found that as my collecting habits have changed over the years, so have my thoughts regarding spending. For example, I'll drop $20 on a blaster, and maybe keep four or five cards if they're PC guys or Reds - so essentially, $5 a card for a Topps Series 2 base card. Yeah, you can get returns by trading the others, but when looking at pure financials, that doesn't seem to make sense.
I, like you, would hesitate spending that much on a single card. Heck, I'd hesitate spending $10 on a single card right now. Why? There are so many Shawn Green and Buster Posey base cards and even some inserts from the late 1990s/early 2000s that I don't have yet that I could grab for a buck or less. I'd rather snag 10 of those for $1 than the other way around.
As far as the original topic? Go to hell Topps - they cater to people who do buy those products. If they were concerned at all about the rest of the collecting world, they would listen to collectors and take into consideration what they say; they'd also make more kid-friendly and collector-friendly sets. But then again, when's the last time you saw someone break a box of Topps Big League or Bunt on YouTube? And Topps won't turn down free publicity (not that that's the sole reason they do this, but one that grinds my gears; in addition, Panini isn't much, if any, better).

I'll never quit collecting entirely, but I am downsizing. Check out my COMC store and help me thin out what I don't want so I can buy cards that I do want. See something you like? Send me a message on here, and we can knock the price down quite a bit. I'll even take a bit of a loss if it means getting you a card you really want.

It must make sense to Topps, and with any business, it has to make financial sense, so I guess the 83 boxes are expected to bring some profit, surely not enough to keep a company in the black, but for that piece of the pie it'd have to.
I do agree that there surely has been a trend away from kids, and per some of the posts recently about kids also seeking the money cards from packs and discarding the rest, does seem to cloud the future of collecting. The owner of the LCS that I frequent here in NJ says that he gets very little business from those under 18-years of age. But that's a societal trend in many other areas of life. What you're pointing out with Topps catering to an elite, or venturing away from the common collector may be true, but it's a microcosm of society in general. And in a progressive society in which we live I don't believe it's ever been any different. Yet, it does concern me in many ways. It's not inherently immoral what they're doing, but there are aspects that bother me as I believe they do you (from your post).
I still say that I can claim to never spending that kind of money on cards, but I used to say I'd never spend $10 on blaster packs, but I do.

I could be wrong, but I think I remember watching a YouTube video similar to this. It was a wooden crate by Upper Deck and cost was ridiculous. Sure, they pulled gone of cards numbered to 10. Even a 1/1. Pulled Lebron, Tiger Woods, Jordan, Trout, Jeff Gordon. But will they get the money back? Almost impossible. I remember thinking, with that much money I could get a new vehicle. Or land. Or a down payment on a house. My answer is NO.
